Does anyone know where to find a cheap radiator online for my 1999 Volvo S80 with Turbo? My radiator tank has been leaking for two months and I tried so many things to patch it but it's just getting worse. I didn't want to spend the money to replace it since I'm selling the car but I guess I have to. All I need is a simple radiator that will work, ... Read More
Got my car back today. Volvo replaced the wheel stops AGAIN. Wheel stops weren't the problem the last 7 times it was brought in for service on the thumping noise, I don't know why it will be the problem this time. They have replaced the wheel stops several times in the past. Looking at older posts on this site about Volvo S80's, this problem goes back to at least 1999.
I just bought four new 225/50 R17 tires for my daughter's 1999 S80 T6 and they are rubbing on the turns. That is the size tire called out by Volvo for that car (even printed inside the gas cap door). What's up? I can't believe it's a shock / strut issue.
I had a '99 T6 and loved the car. The early ones had transmission problems (due to some bolt holes in the wrong places) that gave them a bad name. However, I found it to be a great car. However, as all newer Volvos it is not cheap to maintain, even if you don't use a dealer. I used a factory trained but non dealer servicing company that I have found ... Read More
Hi Irish Casey. Thanks for your very detailed response. (Bond indeed - is my age showing?) I do have a good mechanic. Volvo quoted me $1,200 for a timing belt and 2 mechanics quoted 400 and 500 respectively. I also have detailed service records and they don't mention electrical issues. Because of my business I have to drive something semi-respectible and a rust-dripping, exhaust belching junker just won't do.. I also ... Read More
Hi Jean007 (Bond is it?) I think your concern is spot on if you plan on servicing it at a Volvo dealer. If you have a reasonable private mechanic maybe that's ok. I bought an 02 S80 T6 about a year ago for my teenage son to drive. I was principally concerned about safety and it has cost alot more than my Honda and Toyota for routine maintenance (which I always ... Read More

1999 Volvo S80 Turbo Suddenly over the past 3 months, Message of Add Coolant comes on. It seems to run ok. You can smell the raditor when this happens. I add coolant and the light goes off. Coolant is never on the ground?? Does anyone else know what is going on.
Where is the AM antennae on the 1999 Volvo S80? My FM gets good reception but the AM is OK until I hit a bump or pot hole and then it's just static. I think the ground may be loose but I don't know where the antennae is.
I recently replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my 1999 S80. The Volvo dealer wanted over $600 for the job. I did it myself. I bought the pads & rotors( genuine Volvo parts) from Myswedishcar.com for $200. I received the parts in 24 hours and I took 1.5 hrs per wheel saving me over $400. The job is easy.
I have a 1999 Volvo S80 that recently experienced "hardships." My daughter dented the rear passenger door and scraped the panel behind it--to the tune of $2000+ to repair! Then I ran over a huge rock and have to replace two tires and a wheel and have the car aligned--$670. The car has 137,280 miles on it. Does anyone know how much life I can reasonably expect out of the car ... Read More

Hi, I need a car and I am searching for quite a while now. Buying a car isn`t that easy for me since I am quite tall and most cars won`t fit my size. I would agree that historically in the US, Audi has been a "wannabe" player in the premium market, in the shadow of MB and BMW. I seem to recall a description in one of the Auto mag's of Audi as the "German Buick". I personally shared this perception, which was re-enforced when I test drove an A6 in both 1999 and 2001 while shopping for my last two vehicles (Volvo S80 ... Read More
Anyone have a good site on how to pull check engine codes and their meanings for the Volv0 S80. I bought a 1999 Volvo S80 a few months ago and the check engine light is on. It says the Emission System Service Required, and my guess it is the O2 sensor, but I would like to confirm. JD
Hello everyone and good morning. My current issue, which has brought me to the forum, involves a very uncomfortable noise I am getting while driving the vehicle. It is a constant noise and sounds much like how a dog whistle probably sounds when heard by a dog. It’s driving me nuts but what really has the situation topped with a cherry, is the feedback I am getting from the radio. Feedback ... Read More

My 1999 Volvo S80 has 230K kilometers. At times, after driving a long distance and in warm weather the car will suddenly not accelerate as if there is a fuel problem. When this occurs it can completely stall. The "emmission service required" indicator stays on. At all times, I cannot push the pedal to the floor and get the car to accelerate. It requires a slow and easy acceleration. The Volvo ... Read More

What are you using to read the codes? Not all readers can pick up all of the codes in a Volvo. For instance, I know I can't read brake codes or climate control codes with my reader in my volvo. Ok, what you say makes sense. Assuming that it is in limp mode, I imagine that to have those messages erased would bring it back out of limp mode. Winter mode still uses more than one gear, however. So if you're tranny is not shifting at all, then I still say its in limp mode. Not being able to change the tranny setting is just another restriction of limp mode.
I've got a 03 s80, only way i know how to disengage the winter mode is by pushing the 'w' button on the console, by the tranny selector.
Thanks for your response. However, I have been doing some research and it seems like the car might be in Winter mode. sorry that i can't help with your specific problem, but, yes, its possible (probable) that everything is connected. The ECU has probably put the car is "limp" mode (decreases the power drastically to keep you from harming yourself or the car until the problem causing the service lights is fixed).
I have to depress my 2.9 accelerator almost to the floor in order to get the car to move forward. Once it moves it develops although slowly but it does not change up or down. Get the honda. 1999 or 2000 were terrible years for the s80. A honda would be a much better car for her than the s80. Its not a kids car. You're right about the safety factor though. The volvo is a great car, in later years.
Lexusguy- I didn't mean to put down the XK8 or XKR by my comments. I would love to have an XKR coupe because I feel that it represents what Jaguar has always stood for. It needs to get the all Al body and frame though. It would shred the competition if given a fighting chance by Ford. Now as for the rest of the stable I think the XJ is a ... Read More
I'm replying to you again, as my post was deleted for referring you to a website for Volvo owners that would have helped you identify the service codes. 1999 was the first and darkest year for the S80. The major components that are likely to fail are not mileage-related, and they are EXPENSIVE. I'd buy a 2002 model or newer, because this is a wonderful car.
I am looking at buying a 1999 S80 with 31,000 miles that appears to be in very good condition. OEM pads are cheap compared to the nightmares you can buy with other pads. Warping, loss of hot braking, loss of wet braking, etc., etc. etc.
My wife is very rough on front pads. Her 99' 2.9 just turned 47K and the dealer says there are only about 3-4K left. This will be set three. The first set came at 24K. Anyone have any suggestions for metalic or ceramic non OEM pads and the name of a supplier(s) rollier1
It sounds like you are dealing with an adaptive transmission. If you consistently drive like a granny or consistently drive like you stole it you would never know the car has an adaptive logic transmission. I don't know if I had the exact same problem you're describing. Get the maintenance records from the dealership.
