Volvo S70 Starting Problems

  • volvo s70 cranks but will not start!!!

My friend has a 1999 volvo s70 2.5L turbo that will not start and I cannot figure out what the problem is. A little backround on the car: it was stolen a while back but recovered, we have no idea what happened to the car while it was out of his possession. When we got it back the intercooler was broken but we replaced it and it ran fine afterwards. He ... Read More

    Written by: bdc1989 on Feb 27, 2008 6:38:10 PM

I am looking at getting an S70 from a mechanic friend as a work exchange. He replaced the heater core and removed the head and had it milled. When I start the car, it has what I would describe as "lifter noise" if it were on another vehicle. It goes away when it warms up. He said it is the cam follower. The car has 156,000 and is very clean otherwise. ... Read More

I bought a 1999 S70 new and my wife drove it up until May of '07. We got her a new vehicle but just couldn't part with the Volvo. I drove it a few times and it runs great, but one day, I unlocked the door and the door would not open. I went in through the passenger side and tried to use the inside door latch and the door still ... Read More

Today, it has just over 150,000 miles on it, and I still say it is the best car we have ever owned. We bought our 1999 S70 base brand new in 1999. We ordered it from the factory with no options ... I tried to start my 1999 Volvo S70 AWD Turbo. It acted real rough, kept stalling and black smoke came form the exhaust. I was able to limp it home but it will not even start now. I know I have a bad downstream O2 sensor, but I don't think that would cause all of these problems. Any ideas?

Hi folks. Since we're on the topic of fuel octane rating, my 1999 S70 (base) owner's manual says it'll run on regular 87 octane, but recommends 91. I've switched between 89 and 91, with no difference in performance or fuel consumption that I could tell. Have never tried 87 octane though. Any thoughts/experiences? Anyone suffered pings/knock with 87? Any long-term harm in using 87 or 89 rather than 91?

I have just under 62,000 miles on the car, and recently had it in to the dealer for the 60,000 mile check. The car is idling a little rough, and today the ETS light popped on. I seemed to run ... I have a 1999 S70. It's in great shape, and has given me no major mechanical problems at 94000 miles. Bought it back in 2002 used with about 38k miles on it and loved it ever since. However, the dash has become lose and makes noise on anything but the smooth asphalt (from a slight rattle to and annoying squeak). The lose dash is something I noticed a few months after ... dealer told me they never clean injectors on these cars. If you've done a full tuneup, including filter, cap, rotor, and wires, it could have a boost leak. Its supposedly very common on our vehicles that the rubber boost and vacuum hoses can crack/split with age. Do you have a boost guage. If so, the readings will tell you if this is your problem.

Is the market so soft that I might be able to do somewhat better than tradein price, maybe $17000 or so or would the tradein price of $18000 be about the best I could hope for?

I owned a 1999 Volvo S70 base model. This was touted to be more reliable than the turbos. Not so. The ride was rough, tore through light bulbs, squeaked and rattled, rode like a truck, and left me stranded three times. Each time, the dealer, though they tried, could not identify a problem.
