My daughters volvo (S40 2004 1/2) timing belt broke a few days ago (she has 120,000 miles on her car). She was driving as usual and the car just stopped. Had to be towed to the garage that specializes in volvos. The mechanic says that the damage to the engine was severe and it needs to be replaced. Is this a Volvo issue - Is it worth replacing the engine? Anyone ... Read More
Hello. I have 2.0D new model S40 2004. I have problems with motor. Maybe some onw have idea where is problem. I can start engine and all work but rpm not go more then 1.1-1.5. I can drive but not fast :D I check engine in volvo dealer and they said all is oke. But this problem is for me 3 time. I hope some one understand me :)
The short answer is to increase ground clearance. From day one the 2004 S40 scraped the ground at any slight lot berm or driveway. It has the factory sport suspension so I guess they wanted it to be low to the ground, but it's a bit too low for average driving. Thanks for the reply. Mike123
The stock size is 215-50-R16. Is there a 60 series profile that would fit the 2004 S40? I would like to increase ride height by at least 1" and don't want clearance issues from wheel cowl area to tire.
Nice analysis, but its wrong. The problem w/ the S40 is that it is percieved as too down market to compete w/ the 3 Series and A4's of the world. Volvo historically takes time to replace their models. The first S40 debuted in Europe in 1995,and wasn't changed until 2004. Thats 9 years. S80 went 10 yrs XC90 will be 8 yrs.
It's actually 14.5 gallon in some car. Volvo owner's manual indicates that models with engine code 39 (the 6th and 7th digit of your VIN #) have a fuel tank capacity of 14.5 US gallons (55 liters) When fuel empty light is on you have approximately 2.1 gallons left. It's not recommended that you continuously drive with tank near empty. Refuel as soon as possible before it reaches E or you ... Read More

We recently bought a 2004 Volvo S40. Soon thereafter, we noticed the radio reception was dramatically worse (barely get stations that otherwise are fine) whenever we plugged something into the 12v outlet such as a cell phone charger (charging phone of course). Dealer was even able to reproduce but has no idea where to start looking. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? Thank you.

It's a 16 gallon tank. For your car, when the gauge is on E, you still have 4 gallons left. Just because it is on "E" doesn't mean that the tank is truly empty. (Thanks goodness because my wife drives hers down to E every chance she gets (yes I know that is not good for the car's fuel pump).

I went to the S40 Drive Event in the Bay Area yesterday. Overall, I was impressed with Volvo's new offering. The 2.5T 6MT is a hoot to drive, although it does suffer from some torque steer. Since I'm a Subie guy, I've posted my comments over in the Subaru Crew Cafe forum: kens "Subaru Crew Cafe" Feb 29, 2004 3:10pm Ken
creakid1 "Volvo S40" Feb 17, 2004 3:58am But then, the only Volvo we ever had was a unreliable Belgian-built '86 760 Turbo 4-cyl. The water pump failed repeatly & everything inside the car broke -- from the power seat, sunroof, stereo... & the new S40/V50 is also made in Belgium.
That's right! The German-built Focus is not just more reliable(& fun, too!) than any Volvo, but also more so than all the Japanese. vadp "Hyundai Elantra vs. Mazda3" Jan 17, 2004 5:14pm Without the Euro Focus technology, the next Volvo will be just another stodgy car to drive. Even the ride comfort of the present S60 is below par compare to the more agile Accord-based new TL(see Feb '04 CR). By ... Read More
For all those who are complaining or unsure about the new S40 pricing, you can now build your own 2004.5 S40 on the Volvo Website. Dont click on the normal Build + Price link, go to the New S40 site and then it will allow you to build.
According to the Volvo Cars web site, the MSRP for the new 2004.5 S40 2.4i will be $24,190 and $26,990 for the S40 T5. The current S40 starts at $24,700 for the base model and $28,845 for the LSE model. With the model changeover, you might be able to get a pretty good deal on the existing S40, but IMHO, the 2004.5 S40 is 100 times better. Not sure of the ... Read More
The new S40 pricing is available on the Volvo website. Looks like the base T5 starts @ $27K+ with destination.
Thanks for your input. Yea, I *really* wish I could wait until the '05s come out, but my current lease is up the first week of January 2004. If I could wait, I think the new S40 would be my first choice. The current S40 was my first choice until I read some bad reviews. That led me to research all the other cars in my price range, and I was ... Read More
so one review makes it right? well, then how about this one: http://www.swedespeed.com/features/road_tests/s40_t5_2004/index.s- html They seem to love it. Best handling Volvo ever (aside from the R) and handles like a RWD, according to that article. And considering the S40 T5 will have about the same rate of acceleration as my current T5 and I have none of the issues to the degree of severity that CAR supposedly states, I find ... Read More
I've had my 2004 S40 LSE for about a week now and so far I love it. This is my first volvo and like I said I'm enjoying it, but a lot of the comments made here make the car sound like a piece of junk. I didnt drive any higher end Volvos because I couldnt afford them but this car feels very solid to me and fits my needs. Just ... Read More
I just bought a 2004 Volvo S40 and I really like it, however...the steering wheel vibrates when reaching hwy speed (65-70mph) when driving below 65 mph I am fine, does anybody else has or had this problem?.
I was told that volvo is getting two kinds of S40 for 2004. One with a same style that they have now on June and different model that has rear lights look like S60 on January 2004. I got this information from one of the dealer. Has anyone heard of this? oh~ and I got 22k+tax, title and license deal for S40 2003. When ppl are saying they got it for ... Read More
Automotive News reported the new Volvo S40/V40 series is supposed to debut this fall as a 2004 model. It will use the same platform as the new Ford Focus. Styling is based on the now familiar S60 and S80 series.
does anyone here know if the majority of the problems is fixed in the 2003 year model (the last model year of production)? Volvo is coming out with a v50 in 2004 as a replacement.
