Solid fun brick, expensive repairs

Vehicle: 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo 4dr Wagon

Bought mine used at 170000 miles, now has 230000. Right around 200000, had to replace starter, fuel pump, and the odo. went out. Have not replaced odo. Have computer, overall 30 mpg, probably 26 city, 35+ hwy. I drive it slow, 55 mph on hwy. Just replaced head gasket, $1250 at ind.gar Volvos are super safe (built in roll bar in roof), built to last, superior handling, even for the wagons. I believe that the non-turbo engines are peppier than the turbos (when not in boost range). Parts are very expensive - the starter as a rebuilt was $200, not incl. labor. Found a used one for $30 and did it myself. Could have done the fuel pump myself, and saved $400 on labor (part was $200).

Love my volvo

When I bought this car it needed a new timing belt, which also means a new water pump. Other than that it is so much fun to drive, lots of pep, easy to haul my 100 pound dog and cat in, and easy for them to get inand out. It gets better mileage than our 2003 Cadillac, and looks great doing it. The cup holders are the only problem, and they're horrible.

Tough times in the last

Vehicle: 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo 4dr Wagon

Great car to drive, but expensive to keep on the road. It has high mileage, but Volvos are expected to be solid. Replacements over the last couple of years - ABS unit, turbo (expected at 150K), AC compressor, both O2 sensors, shocks and complete brakes (rears twice) water pump, fuel pump,2 ABS sensors, + minor items. It currently is burning / losing oil. Source not found yet. I did a lot of research on this vehicle prior to buying it and unfortunately, was very disapointed in the reliability.

Great car!

When I bought this car, I had intented to buy a Ford Explorer or Jeep Gr. Cherokee. I drove this car just out of curiosity...I had no intentions of owning a Volvo. Before I got it off of the lot, I knew that I had to have this car. It has high milage, but it runs like new, looks like new, and drives like new. I would recommend it to ANYONE that's thinking of buying an SUV.

Fast wagon

Vehicle: 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo 4dr Wagon

Bought this car used from a dealer. It had 49,000 miles, but looked perfect, and had all the maintenance records. The engine is great, lots of power at stop lights and on the highway. Great for long trips, seats fold totally flat, and can go well over 420 miles on a tank of gas. My only complaint is with the ride over even moderately rough roads. You feel every road bump. I have driven over some pot holes where I thought the front end would fall off the car shook so badly. Ironically, the car rides much better when fully loaded with people and luggage.

Excellent wagon

It has been very solid, dependable. Still drives like a dream at 74K miles. I have kept it up and folks who don't know volvos still think it's a new car. I had one problem, the abs unit went bad and was replaced under warranty. I plan to drive at least 125K miles, then reevaluate it.

I have an 850(1996 with 63,000 miles) and went to look at the 2001 and 2002 S70 and XC. The salespeople of course said how they great they are. They ride nicely and are safe. Then I checked the Tow...

We own a 1988 740 GLE wagon that has close to 175000 miles on it. It's running fine, but we're looking to get a used (probably off-lease) wagon with more power (and an automatic transmission, as it's ...

Our current 2 Volvo's are a 1992 965 and a 1996 855 TLA. We have had the 1992 for 15 months now and find it a pleasure to drive. It is much heavier than the 850 but is very responsive with it's 6 cy...
