wow this thing hauls a--, the turbo has some lag but when spools up hang on it feels like 325 hp not 225. solid nice heavy feel. a friend of mine is a volvo freak and recommended the 700 series i finally found this 850 and have not been dissapointed the car is great in the winter traction control, seat warmers & the A/C is awesome. very nice mid level luxury vehicle. this is the only car i have kept past 2 years.

Favorite Features

the solid feeling of safety, subtle looks, on demand extreme power, climate control, tons of aftermarket upgrades ie ( IPD ).

Suggested Improvements

mine has a few rattles and squeaks which is annoying, parts hard to find, dealerships pricey.

Bought as a second car to drive to work. Had only 87K miles. It turned out to be a real money pit and I traded the Volvo on a new Honda Civic. Overall, I liked the performance, the ride, and the feel of the car but had one problem after another. Bought used from Hoy Fox Volvo, El Paso, TX. Terrible service department, had to have several repairs done more than once before they were fixed. They kept telling me that it was an old car and I should expect some repairs. I know that but they had the car on several occasions to fix the same problems again and again. I asked them, "you're the Volvo dealer, if you can't fix it then who can?"

Volvo's reputation for quality is over rated. Very disappointed and will never consider another Volvo

Wonderful car

Review

I bought this car new in '95 and sold it in '03 to my neighbor. This was a very nice car, and I took good care of it, so it ran well and looked great when I sold it. Regular maintenance means everything! Volvo NEVER failed to take care of any warranty issue I had without arguement. It had adequate power, and was very comfortable to drive. I had very few failures during my ownership, and felt very safe driving it. I now drive an S60 based on the positive experience I had owning this car.

Favorite Features

Moonroof, manual transmission, pleasant syling, low maintenance requirements, the few failures I had were easily fixed..

Suggested Improvements

Better glue on interior panels(the stuff Volvo uses is 'environmentally friendly' and doesn't hold in hot weather.), change battery companies, better motors on power seats.

Boought just last week as a run-a-bout to and from work. Has only 87K miles and is on overall good shape but it has been back to the dealer twice to fix the same problems and I only bought it a week ago. Gasoline leak, fixed and replaced the O ring from the hose to the tank-still leaks, in again to be fixed a second time. Anti freeze leak, replaced radiator cap, reclamped the hose, and still leaks. Again, back to the dealer for repair. Other than these irritating bugs, I like the car. It handles great, good on gas, seats are very comfortable, love the turbo, and I feel like a I got a good deal on the car at $6K. Other than these problems,

I purchased this car pre-owned from a dealership in Dallas. It is a great car, even though it has had a few mechanical (minor) problems. My one word of advice is BUY THE EXTENDED WARRENTY. These cars are great, but they can cost to fix. Especially if you use the dealership. But, as a new mom, (when I purchased the car, I was) it is perfect. Great cargo space, safe, secure, and almost graceful in the simplicity of it's design. I have always loved how safe I feel in this car, an urban tank. If you want a car that will keep you happy and make others envious for years to come, this is the car. A classic. I

Suggested Improvements

- more standardization in parts (less proprietary) - go back to the simpler designs - the new ones are too over the top - too curvy!

I just recently purchased my volvo,it has high milage but it runs like a dream.Gas milage is great compared to my Maxima.Interior finish is good but there's quit a bit of rattling while driving.It's a extremely fun car to drive though sometimes the ride is rough.Overall ,it's a great car.Very reliable.

Favorite Features

Favorite features are the turbo,has great get-up and go.Good sound system.Love the sporty look of the car with a spoiler.

Suggested Improvements

Less harsh ride and add something for less road noise.

Solid, well built car, with excellent safety features. On long trips I can get around 29 mpg; which is excellent considering it is a turbo! After this year, to me, Volvo's began to be made cheaply; they cut back and cut corners. Look at a 1995 850 Volvo in and out, then go to a dealer and look at its new incantation as the S70.

I like mostly the entire car.

Suggested Improvements

Arm rests on both sides of the driver and passenger seats. Inside temp. Better electrical connections for cold climates.

Great car for teenager

Review

This car has been a great car for my teenager. Its safety was a big priority, it's fun to drive and has some luxury items like leather and seat warmers that we don't have on the other cars. I drive a van, and I prefer to drive the Volvo during snow/rain because it has a better feel for the road. The car had 142,000 miles on it when purchased, but we feel our used- Volvo dealer prepped it well and guaranteed everything for one year. Will look for a '96 or '97 for my next teenager car purchase next year.

Favorite Features

Safety, comfort, seat warmers, fun to drive heats up fast in this terrible winter we're having now.

Suggested Improvements

Gas mileage could be alittle better.

Review

In 1995, the Volvo Turbo was the best value: for a luxury performance sedan, it had the best price. It also had the best mix of safety with an ability to hold the road and accelerate. However, the cost of Volvo parts is obscene--worse than Mercedes and on a par with BMW.

Favorite Features

It takes corners and has good acceleration plus the safety aspects. It also does well in snow despite the weight.

Suggested Improvements

It needs cupholders. When the sunroof is open without the windows down, a staccato booming sound reverberates inside.
