Review

I'm very attached to my 850 Volvo wagon. I've had it almost 13 yrs. and it's been the most maintenance free vehicle I've ever owned. The engine is a gem. The interior trim falls apart over years, especially the outside trim. I stopped replacing it. Also, the hatch door trim inside has fallen apart and now rattles. The leather seats have torn, but that's because it lives outside. Sometimes I miss AWD and feel like my Volvo is a tank when it starts to slide, but because it is a tank I feel safe. It's been a reliable car as a single mom of two children. The only major complaint I have now is the driver seat has become very uncomfortable and my back hurts after just short drives.

Favorite Features

Sturdy/safe car, amethyst color, supreme engine overall, tight handling, beautiful, sleek looking car, reliable, country mechanics can still work on it, don't need the dealer most times.

Suggested Improvements

The exterior trim, rear hatch interior trim, driver seat discomfort, better CD player, cup holders broke so long ago I forgot I had them, rear windows only roll down halfway as safety precaution (a bit much).

Vehicle

1995 Volvo 850 4 Dr T-5R Turbo Sedan

Review

I bought this car as a non-running, unmaintained piece of crap basically, after investing over $8k into it I can say its still not perfect but whatever. It's a 1995 Yellow, one of 185 made. At this point it is my favorite car ever (replacing a 96 850R, with half the mileage, and half the problems but oh well, I dont care like I said its a Yellow T-5R whatever it takes I feel i finally have the dream car I had always wanted since I was 10 and my brother borrowed one from the dealer he worked at back in 95).

Favorite Features

240hp 2.3 inline five, suede/leather interior and it's yellow.

Suggested Improvements

Car should have come from the factory with the m56 manual transmission, saving me the aggravation of finding all the components to convert it.

Review

I bought it in 2005 with 102k miles, and it was by far the best car I could imagine getting for the money I spent. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with many amenities like wood trim, CD changer and dual zone climate control that aren't available on many newer cars costing twice as much. The powerful turbo engine was a blast to drive, and it could still outrun the majority of cars on the road today. The engine had some oil leaks when I bought it, but after fixing the leaks the car had no major reliability issues.

Favorite Features

Turbo engine, leather heated seats, CD changer.

Suggested Improvements

The car should have had AWD standard to fully utilize the engine power and for better weight balance.

Review

Have loved my 850T. Rides good, fast acceleration at hwy entry and exits. Has been a solid and fun to drive car. But very high maintenance, sensitive and has been problematic with things that rarely break on other cars. At 135K miles, I have had to replace the normal wear and tear items like belts, batteries and hoses but have had interior trim crack. Door panel cover fell off, sun roof top cover peeled off, cup holders broke, cassette had to be replaced and both over heat and distort tape sound, rear speakers are shot, lights burn out quickly. The suspension and ride are bumpy now and have had ongoing problems with oxygen sensor, oil leaks, coolant leaks, turbo hose and turbo line. Costly!

Favorite Features

Turbo is great for quick power. Heated seats and traction control. When she's in good shape she is great car.

Suggested Improvements

Interior and exterior trim items routinely break. Windshield wipers loud and inefficient. Most hose replacements require removing the engine which doubles the price of the repair. Poor speakers and cup holder quality. Suspension does not hold up with age. Too high maintenance!!

Wow! I've owned that car for over a month, and besides an oxygen sensor and a tune-up, she hasn't cost me a penny. Well, since she's 12 years old, normal wear and tear is visible - those leather seats seem to tear apart in all 10+ years old 850s. And the tailgate struts have to be replaced, but that's stuff that even a tool-challenged person like me can handle. They have made a car whose mechanical components are built to withstand the passage of time! Excellent buy for whoever needs a reliable used car, for below $4000.

Favorite Features

Independent temperature controls (driver/passenger), and the electric moonroof!

Suggested Improvements

Odometer seems to stop working after about 10 years on almost every Volvo 850!

Nice dependable car which had some miles on her when purchased. Depending on how well the car is maintained you may have to invest in some costly maintenance. Be sure that you check the shocks/struts, last timing belt change, horn (ours became stuck just as we were picking our daughter up from middle school, she was quite embarassed) and the door hinges. A test drive on a hot day is recommended so that you can put the air-conditioning system through its paces. History of problems. Car is solid, however be prepared for plenty of rattles from the rear compartment/hatch. There are kits available which can help reduce the noise levels. Would still recommend and would buy another.

Favorite Features

Comfortable to drive. Easy to change the oil.

Suggested Improvements

The horn contacts; you would think that a company which designs a car that is supposedly one the safest vehicles on the road wouldn't skimp on the horn. Hard to believe that it isn't a recall issue. (Dealer wants 500 bucks to fix it.)

Review

I've owned my 1995 Volvo 850 for almost a year and have come to love it. It's not the best car when it comes to things not breaking, but what a wonderful ride. It's great to look at, very comfortable inside and on the open road. I would be careful with the problem with prepare costs, as then can really get you alive. I'm lucky I found a young Volvo mechanic who's very trustworthy.

Favorite Features

Seats, feel while driving, look of the car and how safe you are driving.

Suggested Improvements

Buildi a sound, tightly made car that might last for years and years without costly repairs.

Currently at 197,000 miles. No major repairs at all. Do your preventive maintenance and it will last forever. A few little repairs, but what the heck. Handling positive & sure.

Favorite Features

classic style will not go out of style. Built like a tank. Positraction (whatever it's called) & ABS.

Suggested Improvements

Air Cond. needs more power - just barely makes it
