Review of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

  • This is our favorite midsize car -- in both sedan and wagon form. Don't make your family vehicle choice without driving one.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.

  • Cons

Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

  • What's New for 2002

The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Lotta car in a small

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 4Motion AWD 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5A)

We've had this car for 4 years and I'd love to find another just like it! My wife is a home health nurse in the hills with plenty of snow to push. She feels she can go anywhere she wants with the all wheel drive and I'm not sure that she can't. When the weather is questionable, we take the Passat and leave my Sierra 4WD in the garage. Regular maintenance is all we have done with no unexpected cost.

Never again

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 4Motion AWD 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5A)

My husband got fooled into buying this vehicle. We have had nothing but ongoing problems. We had a warranty, and unfortunately nothing was covered. The interior was falling apart, water pump went out, air conditioning broke, so on, and so on. The problem with these vehicles is that you CANNOT fix anything. You have to take it to a Volkswagen dealer. They have so many electrical problems that it isn't worth it. We traded it in, (for a Toyota) and didn't get anything out of it, but at least we have a reliable vehicle. Never again will we make the mistake of purchasing a Volkswagen.

Disappointed

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 4Motion AWD 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5A)

I have had numerous engine and structural difficulties with the Passat, from engine malfunction and brake pumps failure on several occasions, to doors and windows not working electronically, or doors not closing. Engine failure has been the primary problem, although the design of the shield to prevent water from leaking into and accumulating in the space between the body and the engine has also been a major issue. There have also been many factory recalls on components beyond those that have malfunctioned on my car. VW responsiveness at the corporate level has been unsatisfactory.

Quirky, but fun

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 4Motion AWD 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5A)

Headlights burn out. Brakes squeal like a stuffed pig (they give you a brochure..seriously..called "You and Your Brakes" explaining this is normal!). The little "flipper" over the rear view mirror is for...what? The cup holders stink, you can't read the AC controls, people over 6 feet or 200 pounds should go elsewhere - especially if they think they're gonna be sitting in the back seat (notice the "swoop" of the design). But. If you like to glide at 80 for six hours on the autobahn, man, this thing does it like a real player. And the AWD is unflapable in Maine winter conditions, which is saying a lot. Well built, comfortable. Quirky. Fun.

Passat, excellent car

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 4Motion AWD 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5A)

The Passat is the most luxurious comfortable car i've ever driven. It handles like a luxury auto, my only complaint is the gas mileage is not impressive

A beautiful car

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 4Motion AWD 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5A)

This is, hands down, the best car I have ever owned. Fun to drive, tasteful styling, and more features than you can shake a stick at. Definitely get the GLX model if you like creature comforts. The Tiptronic system works like a dream, and is excellent for driving in mountainous areas, like I do (Colorado). I typically get 20/25 MPG, which is better than quoted, but still could be better.
