when i start in morning it does'nt ref properly sounds like it's going to cut out and back fire put your foot down and nothing and all of a sudden it will kick in go up to 1000'2000 rpm and then back down until warm then not to bad but still does it now and then when you put your foot down.
Had a friend change the fluid and that seems to have helped - at least buys me some time. I would go to somebody - anybody but VW. They bend you over the barrel on EVERYTHING. For instance my Passat needed new serpentine belt tensioner replaced. VW $540.00 just for the pulley and install! plus belt. Had local mechanic replace it $250.00 with belt. 6k seems like 2k too much - ... Read More
Had the same problem with a 2000 Passat. 2 gaskets replaced which cost less than $50 and $800 for labour. I took the car to VW specialists and was advised it was a common occurance. Because they specialize in VW I imagine they would see more than the average mechanic. But, this is a small city of 70,000 people with 10 times as many Golf and Jettas around as Passats.
Yogamam, My Passat 2000 has more than 200k miles on it and it keeps on running. I've never had any major problems with it but I also do all of the recommended service. My service costs have gone down considerably since I left my local dealer at around 80k mile. Had a disappointing experience where they said I needed major repair and had a second opinion from another VW dealer that ... Read More
Wow. Okay, that's a new one. I've never experienced or heard or read about a set of symptoms like you've described. If Edmunds had a "shrug" emoticon, I'd insert it here.
Hello Altair, the dealership ended changing the breather and charged me only for the parts. about 140 $. Seems to have reduced the leaks. At least for now. But then the car developped some quirky problems, sometimes you turn it off and the lights stay on the dash board, you can only get them out by pressing the brake pedal, then the lights come again and you can't lock the doors ... Hi Altair4, Thank you for your answer, the car has about 80000 miles, is in good shape overall, has been well maintained, the valve cover gasket has been changed 4 times, the cam adjuster seals 2 times, t was under warranty until august, vwofa tells me that the repairs done at the dealership are guaranteed 12 months 12000 miles, so i should get the leaks fixed under the nex warranty. Bindhu, I can't answer your question. The car is ten years old. How long do you anticipate keeping it? How bad have the leaks become? What is the condition of the rest of the car? I can't say if the newly designed cap is ultimately going to make any real difference - you might need to research this further online and see what you can come up with. I have no ... Read More
Hi altair4, So what is there to do? Seems awfully kompliziert. Should i just have the seals and gasket replaced under warranty and hope that the new cap from ECS tuning is going to make the difference? Thanks
The Passat has a complicated system of venting the interior pressure of the engine. Whereas other, older cars have a simple check valve, the Passat has multiple check valves, suction pumps, etc. Truly, modern German engineering at its finest! Not only are there myriad parts comprising the positive crankcase ventilation system, they are not readily apparent or visible. The icing on the cake is that some of the hoses are fabric ... Hi everybody, My VW Passat 2000 engine is leaking again after spending close to 1 month at the VW santa monica dealership, they said that they changed 2 times the valve cover gaskets, the camshaft adjusters seals and some other seals and it worked for 3 months, just enough to clear the 10 years power train warranty and then it started leaking again . The 2 valve cover gaskets for instance ... Read More
I bought a 6cyl 2000 Passat GLS in 1999. From I drove it off the lot I noticed the gears seem to hang a bit during shifting. I had to take it back to the dealership 3 times.. I had the timiing belt, water pump and tensioner replaced on my 2005 Passat TDI at 90,000 miles. The total cost was $900 at the VW dealership in Germantown, TN. Like everyone else has said, if you don't know and you have 90,000 miles on the car, change it. It is unlikely that the last person did not have it done.
confused2010: The replies from Shiftright and bronsonb that follow are both right on the money. YES, the quoted price sounds very high...$900-1,000 is more realistic. There are good VW dealers and bad ones...I prefer a good indie shop that knows V-dubs, so shop around. YES, you had better have it done if you can't verify past work. My understanding is that removing the TB cover and inspecting the belt may show ... Read More

Hello, navyguy. Sorry to hear that you and many others have had so many problems. I have a 2002 Passat, 1.8T, and it has been a generally good vehicle, although I have had various electrical issues as well, e.g., CEL light has come on many times. Hey guys, Would appreciate some advice.... I'm looking at a 2006 4motion with low miles (20,000) Certified Pre-Loved and was wondering about any long-term reliability and maintenance issues. I tend to keep my cars for a long time. My previous car (a Ford) lasted for 13 years and over 150,000 miles. I got a chuckle out of your post concerning Bosch electricals. Having owned VWs manufactured in three different decades, I never, NEVER, had that thought cross my mind. True in the 1970's, 1980's and 2000's, at least from my perspective. I tolerate it because my Passat wagon ... Read More

I think people make trade-offs. The difference between best in class and worst in class is statistically significant but not actually significant. You are right. It means "Comfort Coupe." :) Sometimes it is listed as a separate model and sometimes it is considered a trim level of the Passat. thanks, that makes sense. But I've seen something about VW Passat CC, is this something that just describes the model?
CC is almost certainly cruise control (I can't think of anything else it would be). We have a GLX 2000 4motion Passat wagon (that's a higher trim level) that we bought used about 4 years ago and we have really loved it.It's very comfortable and convenient for us and our toddler now, and the drivers seat adjusts nicely to both me and my husband although he is 6'4" and I am ... It's not a "bug", it's a feature. In the US GLX model, the mirrors do that. They're supposed to, IIRC. I have a GLS model (my mirrors don't do anything fancy), so I can't help you any more than this.

I originally posted this as a reply, but reposting it here so that its in the correct category. I have a 2000 Passat 1.8 Turbo which started billowing out a huge cloud of white smoke from the exhaust with an oily smell. Taking off the intake hose I found a small amount of oil on the inside. There has been no recurrence of that smoke bomb or oil smell for three ... Read More
I had a similar situation with my 2000 Passat 1.8 Turbo, there was a huge cloud of white smoke billowing out the exhaust with an oily smell. Taking off the intake hose I found a small amount of oil on the inside. There has been no recurrence of that smoke bomb or oil smell for three days, and the car has run normally. A mechanic informed me this would certainly point ... Read More

Don't Do It!!! That is an almost 7 year old car with allot (for a VW) of miles on it. The car sounds great, but the maintenance and repairs will drain your wallet. Was the timimg belt ever replaced? That is a huge expense that will raise it's head in the near future if it has not been replaced already!
The "tip lag" has been around as of this writing for 10 years. Audi has it, VW has it, BMW has it, Porsche has it and I assume Mercedes has it and so on. Versions of these cars were released that did not have it, however. These versions were usually the sported up versions (the Audi S6 Avant with the 5 speed tip didn't have it, yet the Audi A6 4.2 ... thinking of getting a passat wagon. 2000-2006 era are there any years that are better than others? Over all, how has the quality been with VW and these cars in particular? Don't do it. Every year is equally bad for reliability. Quality is very poor and good dealer service is almost non-existent. In fact just before I wrote this I just noticed my Passat Wagon now has a malfunctioning turn signal ... Read More
according to cars.com VW is offering 2000-3500 to dealers on Passats. let it be known that you know this fact. if the dealer continues to hardball you then just get up and walk out. let them know that they want to sell you a car more than you want to buy one from them. I've done this several times over the decades of car buying; it works every time. good luck! ... Read More
