1997 Volkswagen Passat TDi 4dr Sedan

Review

Purchased my VW Passat TDI in March of
1997 after reviewing several articles
on the TDI engine. Hard to believe you
can get that great fuel mileage in a
mid-size vehicle. No American made auto
can do that. I have almost 150,000
miles on it now and it still runs
great. I like going almost 900 miles
before I have to fill up again. I
change the oil every 5,000 miles and
the timing belt every 60,000.

Best Features

Fuel mileage ranging from 40 - 50 MPG depending on the drive. Went to Las Vegas, NV and back on one tank of fuel. The round trip was a little over 850 miles. I still had room to drive around after I returned.

Worst Features

The California Air Resources Board put the hurt on VW to eliminate their diesel engines from CA due to excessive particulate matter emitted in the air. Seems odd watching all the 18 wheelers driving through the state un-bothered by CARB.
