Original owner, started with hoses, then I had to replace Water Pump, timing belt, heat sensor, among other hoses....Car has been running rough. Sometimes so quiet I didnt even think it was running but as of lately its DRAMA! Feels like Ive been rear ended when it jerks! Recently did a transmission service that Obviously didnt help things. I have a 2002 beetle with the 01M Automatic transmission, but it is in the shop being rebuilt at this time ($3500). My dealer refused to change the fluid when I requested it. I am no longer using any vw dealers. The problem I was having, was when the engine was droping below 2000 rpm, the transmission was droping out of gear and the rpm was increasing. I have a 2002 New Beetle 1.8T Automatic. Recently the car has been sluggish in changing gears. Sometimes it even jerks a little when shifting from first to second. I just got 4 new tires for my 2002 Turble S Beetle - Mastercraft Touring LSR P225/45R17 and an alignment for the total cost of $642.74. I was told that because the camber is still out (1.2 and 0.2 on the front and 1.9 and 1.1 on the rear) that I will now need to pay another $300 to get an aftermarket product to be able to fully align the camber. Depends on WHICH gasoline engine she has. The 1.8 turbocharged engine MUST have synthetic oil. This may not be in the "owners manual" of the 2002 models because this announcement was made (retroactively) by VW many years later after numerous oil-related engine-failures.The turbocharger can 'cook' dyno-oil due to the extremely high tempartures it runs at. ... How do you reset? I am encouraged that this is not a big problem. I thought I was going to need to replace the top AND the mechanism at a quote of $8,000. I have had many beetles. The diesel 2002 was a true LEMON!! I spend as much on repairs as the car cost new! Now this problem with the 2004 convertible is very disheartening. The defacto standard for Volkswagen manuals is Bentley The Bentley manuals are available in both printed and CD form. My wife (bless her heart) gave me a bentley manual as a gift several years ago. The CD versions of the Bentley manuals have the bonus of receiving upgrades thru the internet so you always have the latest procedures and information. Read More...

I just purchased a 2002 New Beetle. I live in rural Nebraska and the nearest VW dealer is 300 miles away. I mean it's not like I live in Mayberry or anything, there are all the usual car dealerships; Ford, Honda, Chevy, Nissan, Chrysler, etc., here, just no VW dealer here.
