We sold our TDI Jetta with just 2K on it. We
could longer deal with the poor execution of the diesel to Jetta experience. Having driven gas powered Mercedes, it was difficult to get used to the difference in the "lack of Luxury".
First, it is a stretch to say this car is "clean".
You will notice the stench of diesel not only at fillup but when you park it in your garage for the first couple weeks. And don't be surprised if you can smell it in your home also.
The vibration at idle and rough start from stop will take getting used to, we did'nt. Buy this if all you are looking for is excellent gas mileage, it's there..avg. 33-46 mpg! Otherwise, choose wisely. It'll cost you in trade in.
Good looking car, German quality evident. "Soaks up" the road well.
Gas mileage impressive.
Headlights are excellent in night driving.
Good power. In highway driving it is hardly noticeable that you are driving a diesel.
Loaded Jetta...where are the power seats......really?
Radio quality poor.
Seats feel like rubber..yuk!
I own a 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI.
I also own a 2008 Mercedes Benz ML 320 CDI, bought new in 2008. Both are diesels.
Evaluating the Jetta against a Mercedes is completely inappropriate - the comparison is grossly invalid.
As to the diesel fuel smell, there isn't any, IF YOU ARE USING THE NEW, LEGAL DIESEL FUEL (maybe this is the source of the "vibration" and "rough start".)
Both cars are parked in my garage, and there simply is no odor at all.
In older diesels I've had (1973 M-B 220D and a 1979 Peugeot 504D) the fuel did smell and they did smoke, but the new fuel certainly doesn't do either.
I have nothing but good things to say about my 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI.
Mileage is outstanding (51.3 mpg on a recent 106 mile round trip), and is understated on the EPA charts because it takes a few thousand miles to seat the rings in a diesel.
And the radio is great.
