2011 Volkswagen Jetta SEL PZEV 4dr Sedan w/Sunroof (2.5L 5cyl 6A)
Review
When I first set eyes on this vehicle I was sold. My SEL is 4 months old now and I wanted to get a real feel for her before writing this review. The exterior styling is much better this time around then the previous generation. It doesn't look cute, it looks cleaner and more Audi A4 like. VW gets a plus here. The ride is firm yet still has enough cushion to endure the NYC roads. The 2.5L has good low end torque when it's needed for passing while the 6 speed auto handles the shifting solidly. The lay out of the interior has good fit and finish. The materials they used are on par with a Chevy Colbalt as cheap hard plastic. Rear seat room is more like a midsize and fits adults perfectly.
Favorite Features
The bluetooth works awesome with my iPhone 4, although the standard command voice can be irritating after a while. The RNS-315 navigation head unit loads maps almost instantly and is easy to follow. Having direct iPod (MDI) intergration is great when being able to control the ipod with the buttons on the steering wheels. The heated leatherette seats are very comfortable and easy to clean. The KESSY works great and takes a bit getting used to. The SEL price is perfect (24k+-) with the Nav and sunroof options added. You get KESSY, bluetooth, 17's wheels, rear disc brakes, fog lights. You make out better by splurging on the SEL rather then a getting a loaded SE. This car is great.!
Suggested Improvements
VW really needs to spend a few extra bucks and make some of the interior trim out of nicer material. The new GLI receives these upgrades why not at least the SEL. Soften up at least the top of the door panels for my elbow to rest on.! Oil and coolant temperature gauges would be nice to see. The need for a ESP/Traction control on/off switch. The traction control system works ok and isn't overly sensitive. This NY winter has proven its worth so far. Gas mileage around town average 21 mpg. No long trips just yet. The FM radio reception gets weak and isn't perfect. This is due in part because the antenna is built into the rear window. Still need to get VW to try and fix this.
