I have a first half 05 TDi Jetta that I just went to take on my vacation last friday. It has 160000 on it and I made it 79 miles and it dropped dead. I had it towed to the stealership (they wanted 500 bucks) and they just gave me the run down. $1989 for the timing belt, water pump idler etc etc etc. So if you can get it for 1200, take it! First, if you are serious about buying the car, call the leasing company (is it VW?) and see if they will negotiate on the buyout. I was able to do that with the last leased car that I purchased at lease end, a Nissan that was leased from NMAC. I am not sure that this response will be pertinent to you, but I replaced a 2003 Jetta wagon (TDI) with a 2005 Volvo V50 a few years ago. The reason I was looking to replace the Jetta is that I found the leatherette seats very uncomfortable. Otherwise, aside from it being underpowered, I was happy with the Jetta. Hope this helps.
