Jetta TDI #2

2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDI 4dr Sedan (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

Review

First Jetta TDI 2000 model was purchased used with about 40,000 Miles. Needed and automatic with good mileage for a daily 86 mile round-trip commute. Has excellent torque and good performance in traffic. After 3 years of ownership got an average of 40+ mpg. Became interested in the improved engine on the new models after 2004 which had additional torque and horsepower and also wanted an upgrade to the GLS with leather heated seats and moon roof so purchased a 2005. I have only 3,000 miles on the car but have averaged 42 MPG or better on each tank. The performance reflects the increased torque and horsepower. Am very pleased with the car.

Diesel Only

Excellent driveability and road handling is nearly sports car like in its response. The diesel engine has started without any assistance at -5F and the fuel mileage has been consistently 46 mpg. The 2001 VW, with the same engine consistently ran 50 to 55 mpg. That vehicle had 160,000 in three years with minimal problems.

Software Problem for Jetta CA, MA and NY

As all of you who own a 2004 or 2005 model year Volkswagen Jetta sold in California and other states, the car has a unique problem that causes it not to start smoothly in the morning. I found numerous complaints filed to the National Highway Transporation Safety Administration for the 2004 Jetta. The jerk start is caused the sudden engagement of transmission when the brake lamp is turned off. Until then, there is no drive power supplied to the drive shaft. Don't you feel it? Other than that this is a nice car.

I have had VW's for the last 8 years, and this one tops them all. We have had Golf's, GTI's, and most recently a 2004 Passat, but this Jetta is the best package I have ever seen in a car at 25K or less. You can't touch it in another make for the money.

2005 Jetta TDI (Pumpe Duese)
By Brian on 12/30/04 16:35 PM (PST)

The new Pumpe Duese TDI offered in the 2005 Jetta is even better than the already proven diesel of the last generation. The new TDI features a direct injection, which as a by-product boosted engine performance and fuel economy. For those interested in speed - the New TDI Jetta will out perform the 2.0L gas 5 speed manual Jetta and get twice the gas mileage during the process! Overall, the new Jetta drives with outstanding peformance, efficency, balence and versatility.

First, I love this car, Its excellent in so many ways. I feel so safe and comfortable at all times, althought the seats are kinda tiny. I'm 5'11, and feel a little squished, but the cars makes up for it in handling, performance, looks, head-turning capabilites and so many others. I have had a couple problems. The rear doors got jammed and wouldnt open. VW fixed that, and the heater takes FOREVER to heat up! Otherwise, I love it!

Traded a 2003 Beetle for new Jetta GLI, worst trade ever made. Jetta has good performance, poor gas mileage from what sales person explained. Major problem with brake issue. I have only owned for 2 months, been in shop 3 times for brakes and still not fixed. Paint was bubbling on rear of car. One of the BBS rims paint faded.

A fun car to drive. It has lots of acceleration for normal highway driving. The fuel economy is wonderful at todays prices.I have gotten as high as 49 mpg on a trip, and always get at least in the low 40's.Slightly pricey, but nothing except hybreds come close to the fuel economy.

Favorite Diesel

I chose the diesel option for it super mileage and I am not disappointed. My commute is 30 miles each way, 90% highway speeds and I average 48 mpg! On a trip to Florida I got in the low 50's driving 70 miles per hour. Front seat are comfortable but back seats are too small for large adults. The heat and cooling controls are too low and you have to take your eyes off the road to adjust them.
