Volkswagen Jetta Maintenance and Repair

Re: 2004 Jetta Electrical problems [tdrewke]

Have you had the battery checked? Free at Autozone. Loose or corroded connections on battery. Loose belt on alternator. Bad alternator. Bad diodes in alternator. Bad dashboard dimmer switch. These are the things I would look at. Might be other things that other people might come up with that is more specific to VW. Read More...

2004 Jetta Electrical problems

Just had my water pump replaced under VW warranty (I had the VW Certified Used warranty) and they did the timing belt while they had it apart. A few days later I was driving at night (about 45 minutes worth of NYC-area traffic, plenty hot, 86 degrees outside) and suddenly the lighting on the HVAC panel fades, then the main instrument cluster dims, then the ABS and ... Volkswagen Jetta vs. Honda Accord

Re: [bunkie1]

In August 2008, I handed down my 2004 Jetta to my son. I loved that car. I got a great deal on a brand new 2008 Honda Accord EX. One year later, I am thinking of trading it in for another Jetta. The turning radius is not as tight as the Jetta, and I am short and have a very hard time with judging distance on this car. A friend parked it for me the other day and said the same thing. ... VW Jetta TDI

Re: civic diesel mpg would be >60 ! [jkinzel]

Agreed that the higher density of diesel fuel means that a given volume size of onboard tank carries a larger weight of diesel fuel, but is this really a big benefit? My Volvo V70 gasoline 168hp 2.4L with 5-spd auto has a range of over 500 hwy miles with its 18 gal tank, and my wife's XC90 3.2L petrol 6A will go over 500 hwy mi on its 21 gal tank. Diesel versions of these ... Read More...

VW Jetta Basic Maintenance Questions (Oil changes, fluids, etc.)

Powertrain warranty coverage

I bought 2004 VW Jetta 6 months ago whose manufacturer warranty is expired but I have powertrain warranty until Dec 2010 since it was a certified VW. Today all of a sudden speedometer stopped working and also gas indicator needle started swinging. It looks like something like a electronics problem. My question is, will it be covered under powertrain warranty, ... Read More...

'05 Timing Belt Change?

Can someone out there give me a definitive answer on the timing belt change for a MY-2005 Jetta TDI? I've heard different times and I don't want to push my luck too far. Mine is a model year 2005, mfg in 2004. The manual states (I think) 90,000mi. However, since my car was on the cusp of the engine/body/manual change I want to be sure that is correct for my vehicle (since ... Read More...

Volkswagen Jetta 2005 and earlier

Which engine is better?

I'm considering buying a 2000-2004 Jetta (no specific model) with a automatic tranny and was wondering which engine has a better track record as far as reliability? the 1.8T, the 2.0, or the VR6? I've test driven both the VR6 and the 1.8T and honestly I like both of them, although the 1.8 seemed to be somewhat smoother upon acceleration and I must admit I liked it ... Read More...

Jetta Transmission Problems and Questions

Need Help!!! Thumping noise coming from the axle?

I have a 2004 VW Jetta GLS 2.0L/5speed tranny. Just recently I started noticing a thumping noise coming from left front side of the car. Then I started to feel it underneath my gas pedal. The noise only present itself when I accelerate hard that's when the thumping begins. When I do let off the accelerator the noise stop. One person told me it's my wheel bearing and ... Read More...

Volkswagen Jetta Brakes and Rotors

99-03 Front/Rear Brakes

To all, I am an Engineer who used to work for the OEM of Jetta Brakes (through 03 model). There are rigorous Dyno and Wear tests that are performed on pads, and typical minimum mileage is usually 50K miles. There is no way brakes should wear before then. When I was working for this manufacturer, we never had any complaints or recalls from VW, and all customers were ... Read More...
