Without physically inspecting the car, diagnosis is difficult. MAF or ECT may be suspect. MAF = Mass AirFlow sensor ECT = Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.
I have a 2002 VW Jetta. Whenever I slow down e.g. approach traffic lights, my engine just completely cuts out. It starts again with no problem. I’ve had the car for about 10 years. Lately, this used to happen about once a month but it now happens more often. The other day it cut out six times in the space of 10 minutes! Can any mechanics or people who know about ... Read More
I took my 2002 Jetta to a car maintenance chain (whose name I will withhold) the other day and was told "word came down from the top" that all VW and Audi models from 1997-2012 now require synthetic oil, instead of the regular oil I've been using for the past 9 years. I was charged $85 for this service. Does my car really need synthetic oil or did they rip me ... Read More
Dont forget that that the MAF in your 2002 may have been part of a "manufacturers extended warantee" where VW chose to replace the MAFs for an extended length of time beyond the 'standard' VW warantee. I doubt that your mileage is still within that extended coverage... but my point is that the MAF was KNOWN to be failure-prone and VW tried to make things right for many folks who had ... Read More
You asked for information... here it is: I have been "inside" engines several times and I am not sure how oil can "get onto" sparkplug whilst it is not running. (virtually impossible) It is possible for ANTIFREEZE to leak into combustion-chamber when hot engine is turned off and there is a leak in the head-gasket. The pressure in the cooling-system can push the antifreeze into the combustion-chamber. This would make engine ... Read More
Perhaps the starter return spring is 'weak' - hence it is not disengaging properly.
I just got my volkswagen Jetta and at the beginning of the day when I start it, it makes a grinding noise (as if I held the key in for too long) But I do it the same everytime and at the end of the day if I've driven it some that day it doesn't do it.. What could be causing this?
I have a 2002 Jetta, GLS 1.8 T., 145,000 miles. About a week ago, the coolant light (flashing thermostat) came on the dash. Checked the "globe" coolant tank, it was empty. I bought 50/50 coolant (NOT the red colored VW coolant) and added to the full line. About 24 hours later, light came on again, coolant was completely empty. Kept adding coolant for about 3 days until the oil pressure light ... Read More

I think a VW technician or independent shop should scan the transmission computer for trouble codes and if necessary, then do a pressure test, before you write the whole thing off--there are various electronic components that might be affecting the shifting. Looks like R&R is not that big a job, but probably not easy without a lift and proper safety equipment. VISITING HOST

My research showed that for early Golf/Jetta 4 models, the timing belt interval was put at 40k which was enhanced to 120k from 2002 onwards (as far as I rememeber). I am still assuming that the previous owner made the first replacement since this is a critical ... Read More
Hey there, I have a 2002 2.0 Jetta - 46k. I was told by the dealership that it needs a new Alternator and they want $700. Seems a bit steep to me. If you have a tech that is putting too much oil in your car at the oil change and you are having to suck it out-something is wrong with that picture because ... Read More
What you say regarding VW dealers in general may be be largely true, but each dealer should be judged individually. I have gone soley to the VW dealer for service and repairs since the late 1980's because the two premier VW/Audi technicians in town closed their shop and went to work for the dealer. I trust them more than the remaining independent shops. True, the guys who do the oil changes ... Read More
