2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5M)
Have owned this car for about three years. It had 94k mi when I bought it and now has 118k. Have done a lot of repairs, but not any more than for the multitude of 100+ k mi vehicles I have owned in the past.
The car came with service records and is in excellent condition for the age and mileage. I have done brakes, alternator, clutch, suspension, front susp bushings and ball joints. Unexpected repairs were: Fan Control Module, PS Pressure hose, timing chain.
The TC broke at 117K, causing damage to 5 valves and an injector. Cost of repairs were around $4500, but still worth it considering that I have a 12 yr old car with 118k mi that looks, runs and drives like a new car.
180 hp may not sound like much, but VW has always been good at making the most of it - This car is no exception - It accelerates fast enough to be considered a bona fide sport sedan and I have outpaced an early 2000s Mustang GT on a hill. The sport suspension on the GLX (Now have KYB OE replacements) allows for very precise handling that belies the car's status as a humble sedan, while still being
well composed on rough roads. The short wheelbase makes parallel parking and maneuvering in tight spaces a breeze, and I can often squeeze past traffic to make RH turns, along with the motorcycles!
I could complain about the crappy cupholders or broken latch on the armrest cubby, or the fact that describing the exterior styling as 'bland' is perhaps too kind. A lot of people do.
However, in my opinion, VW designed a good car for people who value performance above all else. If you're more interested in having a cupholder for your Big Gulp, or you like to cheap out on maintenance, go buy a Toyota and stop giving VW a bad name.
