Some VWs of that vintage fell victim to the "coolant migration problem". The worst-cast scheario was a total electrical failure. Lets hope you did not purchase a VW which was affected by this problem. Your 1999.5 was KNOWN for having a faulty coolant-temperature-sensor (CTS). In fact VW changed the design of it to be more reliable. The CTS on the 2.0L engine is VERY easy to change. The green temparture sensor replaces ALL the engines which used the defective one. This includes TDI, 2.0L, 1.8T engines. (I am not certain - but I think the rectangular-connector sensor started use in the 2000 model year) I am not sure if your 1999 has the same engine which uses the green sensor. I agree with ruking.... VW changed the design and extended the timing-belt replace interval between 1999 and 2006. Early engines had 60K mile change while some after 2003 recommend 100K change. again -- the FEDERAL laws about emmissions are pretty clear. A dealership would be unwise to attempt to "give you the runaround" when it comes to the the "Federal emmissions warantee". Jetta Electrical Problem
Simultaneously the door locks, the window controls and the dome light qiit. Also the trunk deck is released when the headlights are turned on. Has any one experienced this on a 1999 and one half Jetta, 4 cly, gas engine. Fuses are all fine. Would one suspect the body control module, a bad ground or a relay?
