Some VWs of that vintage fell victim to the "coolant migration problem". The worst-cast scheario was a total electrical failure. Lets hope you did not purchase a VW which was affected by this problem. As for the alarm-system causing your issues - It is possible that when you bought it, you did not get the proper keyfob that controls the alarm. It is also possible that some of the microSwitches inside ... Read More

Your 1999.5 was KNOWN for having a faulty coolant-temperature-sensor (CTS). In fact VW changed the design of it to be more reliable. The CTS on the 2.0L engine is VERY easy to change. First, you should open the hood and look at it. The new-improved one is GREEEN. If yours is not green, then replace it. It is trivial to replace, I changed the CTS on my daughters 2001 2.0L in ... I do have problems with it, though. First, the front bumper was ripped off several times by parking curbs and I've had to pay to have it put back on more times than I can count. ... Read More
Are you most concerned about the reliability complaints?? I can give you another real world reliability report for the 3 VW's I have owned, and will list everything that was done, with the exception of tire replacements because I burned the tread off of them, amd regular maintenance. 1999 Jetta GLS 2.0 1)had LED lights for dash vent indicators replaced because of a short causing the lights to flicker at 5,000 ... Hello all. In the next year I am looking to buy a 1999 or 2000 jetta (5sp/4 or 6). I am looking for testamonials. I am used to toyotas, and understand VW is NOT toyota, but I don't want a maint. nightmare. Perspectives? Thanks.
Cyberdyne, I bought a Jetta in 1999 and I've really enjoyed owning it, despite some problems. My wife liked mine so much, she bought one just like it. I recommend the stick shift model, rather than the automatic. Have you driven one yet? I received in the mail notice that VW is extending the Emissions Control System warranty for mass air flow sensors. The notice says a malfunction can cause the ... Read More
Simultaneously the door locks, the window controls and the dome light qiit. Also the trunk deck is released when the headlights are turned on. Has any one experienced this on a 1999 and one half Jetta, 4 cly, gas engine. Fuses are all fine. Would one suspect the body control module, a bad ground or a relay? Surely this has happened to other Jettas/Volkswagens.
I purchased a 1996 Jetta in 1999. I just got done replacing the ignition switch for the second time ($280)!!! Has anyone had any luck getting VW to own up to this faulty part?
How much is a rear brake job. Which includes new rotors and pads on a 1999.5 Jetta? Someone I know was charged $373 for it from a VW dealer.
VW OEM has a technical bulletin Feb 1999 in which it does say very clearly that 5w30 synthetic oil should be used and the customers notified of the change for ALL TDI engines 1996-1999. Most would connect the dots and say it applies to 2000-2003 model years. However, as late as 2003, the information can be a tad confusing about requirements for TDI engine oil. While I personally use Mobil Delvac ... Read More
I have a 1999 Jetta Wolfsburg. The alarm system has decided to arm itself and will not disarm. Keeping me from being able to start the car. I have tried the 'reset' procedure(2 of them in fact)provided by VW but they did not work. The first was to lock and unlock the car with the key on the drivers side 10 times, then leaving it in the unlocked position for 10 ... Read More
Jeremy: I live in Denver and have a 2000 VR6 Jetta. Over the period that I have owned this vehicle it has been to just about every Denver Metro VW service facility for one thing or another. By far the best in my book is Osborn VW in Lakewood. I have been going there for the past 2 years and they have excellent, prompt service and have been very good to ... Read More
Hey guys! I'm in the market for a new car and have been interested in Alero's and Jetta's...especailly TDI models. You guys all know how hard it is to find a low mileage TDI in good condition, right? Well I found a white TDI 1998 63,000 miles 5 speed, a/c, and sunroof for about 10K. What do you think...good deal or not? What is the timing belt change interval on that? ... Read More
If the dealer fixes that starting problem and there are no other problems to mention, I'd get the car. If they keep saying they fixed it, but never is, get rid of it. You should try a 2003 with that $199 per month lease. Even though it's a GL, it has tons of standard equiptment. I don't know too much about that lease (I just posted a question on the regular ... With that information, you can decide if the extra cost and performance of fuel ... Read More
For anyone with a 1999.5-01 Jetta and prematurely wearing pads (not sure of the mileage they consider 'premature'), there is a TSB where VW will replace the pads and/or rotors free of charge. They will just use the same cheap stock crap though. I have Mintex red pads on the way, and am getting new stock rotors. Will end up going to my buddy at Meineke (and I know they prolly ... Read More

adg44: get my facts straight? what part didn't you understand? of course VW competes with Hyundai. can't get any clearer than that statement. and are you trying to say that the 1.8T is not used in other countries? of course it is. it is just that Americans (myself included in a lot of ways) are into buying more expensive things, based on what the big companies and media say. i like ... Unfortunately for the companies, so will alot of people. And rightfully so. I am sure everyone (by now anyway) knows the laundry list of possible problems with the 1999.5-present Jetta/Golf platform. * Prematurely wearing rear brakes, cheap materials the culprit * Coils (just added) on the 1.8T engines * Power window regulators (which they FINALLY did something about, 3 years after it happend!) * Peeling of interior trim (the latest, happening ...
