One of the best cars

Vehicle: 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg 4dr Sedan

I bought my Wolfsburg after my '93 VW Fox was taken away from me in a bad car accident. I ended up getting a really great deal on the car from a used VW dealer, for $1,500 less than book value. The car has been very reliable, and with about 150,000 miles on the clock as of today, only a few things need to get replaced. Its build quality is supurb, despite the fact that not all Jettas are known for it. Living in Michigan, the car goes great all summer and all winter, and going down the highway offers a pretty comfortable ride combined with exelent gas mileage (33 MPG between home and Chicago). I would recommend the Jetta to anyone looking for a first car, but of course, you have to have the money.

Very reliable

]My Jetta has been very reliable and has lasted through a beating. It comes with a good warranty if things happen to go wrong. It could use more power, but is sufficent for everyday driving.

Best car i've ever owned

I have nothing but high praise for my 1996 VW Jetta. 'Nothing but normal maintenance or repairs was ever needed on it, exhaust, tires, battery, etc., etc. For the first several years, it got a lot of miles, about 40,000 in year one and it had gone to 100,000 by year three. Its front brake pads had to be replaced at 93,000 miles for the first time and then pads, rotors, shoes and drums needed replacement at 131,000 miles although they were still legal. Now my Jetta needs some more repairs, but nothing unexpected. VWs like higher RPMs than Japanese cars so I've pretty much always driven it in the torquey sweet spot. I can't imagine the abuse others have given this fine car to have had such problems with it. I still have it and just bought my 10th VW. I'll still drive it 6,000 miles a year.

Heed used vw's with caution

I have had NOTHING but problems with this car! Granted, it is partly my fault and here's why: I test drove a few and then stopped. I found my car and since I had already driven a Jetta I didn't think I needed to drive this particular car--WRONG!! I realized it had a loud rattling noise under the car. I took the car in to get it fixed and ended up going back SEVEN times in SIX months for various problems. Not but a couple months of getting all that fixed I had to buy a new clutch (to the tune of $800), brakes, and tires etc. Granted while some of them are wear and tear stuff--I have NEVER regretted anyting more than buying this car.

Economical and fun to drive...

I purchased this car with 32,000 miles on it and have since put on 40,000 miles of my own. I opted for the 2.0 instead of the vr6 and I haven't regretted it for a second. In the dealer's words, "you could drop a bomb on this engine and it would keep on running." I believe it! This little 4 banger has been very reliable and fun to drive. Although I can't outrun the new turbocharged 4 cylinders or the v6's of the world, the engineering behind the jetta gl 5 speed puts you in touch with the car. This car has the reliability you'd expect from Honda and the personality that only VW can offer!

My father warned me not to buy a VW, but I didn't listen--Now I kinda wish I had. I love the look of the car and it's really fun to drive, however, I bought it used in 2000, so it was already 4 years old. I was elated until I took it in 7 times for repairs. Lucky for me I got a great 3 yr./100,000 mile warranty--otherwise I would have been screwed!. All the repairs were covered-- but about 9 months later the clutch, brakes and lights all needed replacing. I will say, though, that those are typical things that need replacing. I would just recommend that you really take your time choosing and researching.
