1993 Jetta 2.0L not starting (FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!!) I love my Jetta and so far I had not had many problems with it. One day it just would not start so I tried the old lock and unlock the door trick (the alarm on some of the VW’s have an anti theft device that does not permit it to be started when tripped). That did not work so I did the ... Read More

Jetta Transmission Problems and Questions

  • Re: No warning, differential/transmission locks up on freeway [naz2]

Unfortunately, automatic transmissions are an Achilles' heel with VWs - dating back to the 1970s. They have been notorious differential-eaters. The manual transmissions have been very robust. As far as your Jetta is concerned, the 2.0L automatic transmissions were made in Mexico, and are a mixed bag when it comes to reliability (at best). I have a 2003 Wolfsburg 1.8T with the 5-speed tiptronic transmission which was made in Japan by ... Read More

I just bought a 2001 jetta 2.0... Sorry to hear that... 1999 through 2002 model Jettas have proven to be quite problematic (especially if you have an automatic transmission model). Other potential problems you may encounter: - Falling windows (due to VW''s idiotic decision to use plastic rwindow etaining clips instead of metal ones). - Coil pack problems due to cracking (replacement packs are very difficult to find - not to ... Careful, there...she did not say what year her car is. I don't know when VW started using G12, but my kid's '97 was orginally G11 (not G12). According to the Bentley Manual (covering 1993-1999 Golf/Jetta and 1995-2002 Cabriolets) right in front of me, VWs from early 1997 production (and on) SHOULD be used on all water-cooled VWs. So unless she has a VW made before 1997, any antifreeze that is used ... Read More

VW Jetta Basic Maintenance Questions (Oil changes, fluids, etc.)

Not being smart..just asking are you sure 4? Yep. I have the factory manuals for Golf/Jetta covering both the Mk3 (1993-1999) and Mk4 (1999-early 2005), and the specifications for the 2.0 engines (Mk3 & Mk4) say 4.2 qts. As a matter of fact, having owned VWs for 25 years (including a 1975 Scirocco and 1987 Golf GT), that amount hasn't changed much over the years. The 2.0L engine is basically an ... Read More

The same thing happened to me with my 1997 when I first purchased it. Check the coil for cracks (common for the 1993-1998 model year VWs with the 2.0L 4-cylinder). If a crack is visible, replace the coil. I purchased a new coil for my 1997 and installed it. Problem solved.

This has happened to me before in my 1997 Jetta. Here's what you need to do: There's a special security code that you need to activate the radio. There should be a pamplet specific to your radio in one of the sleeves of your owner's manual with the instructions on how to reactivate your radio. For the radio code, you will need to go to the nearest VW dealer and they ... Read More

  • Strange turn signal problem on 1993 Volkswagen Jetta

Written by: seadour on Oct 19, 2003 4:49:32 PM

Hi all-- I just bought a used 1993 VW Jetta III last July, and since a few days ago it has started doing something very strange: When I apply even the slightest pressure to my brake pedal, and the turn signal is on, it immediately stops working. Once I take my foot off the pedal, it works fine again. So, as you can tell, it is becoming an annoying problem, especially ... Read More

Cabrio has a worse reliability record than my Jettas did? not possible, believe me. yep, the Cabrio is DATED as heck. the interior is so old school. but, coupled with the boxy exterior, it has charm to me. i mean, really, the Cabrio goes back to what, 1993? and even in that redesign, it didn't really look different from the A1 and A2 Rabbit ragtops. i guess i like that. the ... took forever to read these posts. nope, didn't buy the Miata. i really need heated seats and more room in the trunk. this is my only car. bought a used 2002 CABRIO. yep, i am part of the 2 slow crew now. one thing is for sure, i forgot how superior VW's base 4 speed adaptive auto tranny is to the 5 speed Tip. i don't miss the gear hunting in ... VW is not the most customer oriented, and you can perceive that from the interviews with their chairpersons. In the New York Times article about the coils, a VW rep said they didn't see it as a safety type recall. Excuse me? My car can lose power at any time, without any warning but an engine light, and it's not a safety issue?!? Okay, whatever... The coil problem started from the ... Read More

  • Considering a move from Accord to Jetta

Written by: karab on Mar 8, 2002 9:48:30 AM

Justin, I am also considering a new Jetta and was interested in your comments to Mark regarding Hondas v. VWs. I too have a Honda (1993 Accord LX w/ 192,000 miles) that I love. I am not one for upkeep, so other than an occasional, and I do mean occasional, oil change, I have done nothing in terms of maintenance. With almost 200K miles, it has had its share of repairs, ... • 2002 Jetta GLS vs 1989 Jetta GL

Written by: xud on Feb 18, 2002 9:28:44 PM

I have owned my 2002 VW Jetta GLS 1.8 T for almost 6 months. I had also owned a 1989 VW Jetta GL from 1993 to 2000. Both are 5 speed manual. I would like to make some comparisons betwen the two models. I hope VW will read this! While the new model is better in certain areas (e.g. safty, power, apperance) than the old model that I owned, to my ... Read More

If you hate Jettas so much why on earth do you own one?? I have had better luck with VWs then any other car I have ever owned. I think I can speak with authority there since I have owned 23 new cars since 1993. I have owned Nissan, Ford, Chevy, VW, Mazda, and Jeep. (probably a few others that I can't think of too) Anyway, the VWs that I have ... Read More

I ended up trading in the 1999 Protege, as well as the 1993 Bonneville I inherited from my mother's passing, and got a 2001 Protege. I went to 3 different VW dealers to look at Jettas and Golfs, and they were all real rude to me. Also, I couldn't get past the short warranty and lack of rear seat room compared to the Protege. So I got another, and love it! ... Read More
