New Rabbit vs. Used GTI or Golf

  • New Rabbit vs. Used GTI or Golf

Written by: geddes on Nov 7, 2008 11:28:12 AM

I haven't had a car for a while (city living), and I now need to buy one. I'll be driving about 300 miles a week. I want a VW, I think German engineering the way to go. My question is, do I buy a new Rabbit or a used GTI. My budget is about $15k, I'd be taking a loan and can justify about $500 a month in payments. I don't ... Read More

"if the focus or mazda 3 accomplished what they do using a torsion beam, than i'm sure you wouldn't complain. there is no denying the purity of the type r philosophy." According to Brit magazines, the better Civic Europeans dream of is the multi-link-rear sport sedan privately imported from Japan! MkV's Control Blades really improved the MkIV GTI. The New Beetle, with 40k miles on it, cost our family friend $2,200 to get her A/C and electrical gremlins fixed. 40,000 miles, and 5 years? I dare anybody to go and check the build quality on these three vehicles we are discussing in this thread. Look at the paint, how the parts are put together inside and outside. I bet Honda will make you puke...is that bad. VW wins by far while Honda is by far the worst of the three. And many people will tell you they get to hear the proper/solid thunk of their ... CarMan - From reviewing the posts here, it does not appear that VW is offering any kind of support for the 2007 GTI. Do you have any inkling of when they might introduce some support? I am currently in a 2004 Passat (that you helped put me in with your timely info) that was barely over invoice and a lease money factor of essentially 0%. Obviously, I'd like to get my ... Read More

there was a similar debate... VW Passat vs Audi A4. Back then, the A4 was virtually the same as the Passat, with the addition of some luxuries and the Audi badge. I went with the Passat because it was slightly more roomy, and it cost a little less. Plus, I just didn't care for being in an entry level model of luxury car.. it just seemed too yuppie-like for my tastes. ... Read More

I originally bought a 2006 with the intention of giving it to my son who is now 15 and a car enthusiast.I originally drove the STI, Evo and R32, M3, etc and actually had a deposit on a M3(BMW M3) for it fits the ticket more for me, Im 52, but decided it was too expensive and decided to make a purchase for ... As for reliability, my 2004 VW GTI has been trouble-free for 28,000 miles. Not one warranty claim! Mazda's have issues, too - just take a look at the following forum - Mazda3: Problems & Solutions Not doubting your luck with your VW, but, the VW GTI has had more problems, historically, then the Mazda3. The VW GTI lost head-to-head against the Honda Civic Si.. Look at the reasons why (handling, cornering, overall driving characteristics). Have you ever done a track day with it and seen 175 mph? I road to work today on my 2004 Kawasaki ZX-10R. There isn't a car on the road that will hang with it. Unless you have one fast ... Read More

Blueguydotcom is a Mazda product planner's wet dream. I've never seen anyone with such a hard-on for the Mazda brand. I currently own a 2004 VW GTI, after owning a 2001 VW Jetta VR6, and there is no way a Mazda 3 compares kindly to my GTI. The Mazda 3 feels and looks more like a Korean car than a Japanese or European car. Two months ago, I test drove a ... Read More

I recently sold my 2002 GTi due to reliability problems. I now have a 2004 Acura TL 6 speed, which is very fast, but really a bit of a lump to drive. I miss the handling and tactile, immediate nature of the VW. Will the Mk V sold in the U.S. be German built (I thought I read somewhere that all Golfs would be but could be wrong)? Also, will we ... We last reported a decision on whether to sell the car stateside was dependent on whether it could meet U.S. crash standards. I could see how an RSX could be considered more of a direct competitor to the GTI or 337 as long as you factor in what an SI is actually selling for. The RSX is a Civic in Japan after all. I saw a black SI in traffic today and followed it for awhile - I like the rear styling, very European IMO. The fact that the SI is so rarely ... Read More

I agree - I can't imagine the R32 selling over here for that kind of money. If VW decontented it by removing the navigation, auto climate etc, etc and brought the price down to $25 - $26k maybe they'd have a shot. I wouldn't be interested on one since the Golf V will be here in about a year. I'll be replacing my GTI in late 2004 which will be excellent ... Read More
