Written by: twane on Aug 29, 2008 6:31:47 PM

It means "Acceleration Slip Regulation." It can briefly apply the brakes to a spinning wheel under acceleration to divert traction to the wheel with traction via the differential. (This action is referred to by VW as "EDL," or Electronic Differential Lock.") The other function of ASR is to cut the throttle if the brakes application function isn't effective or when driving at higher speeds.

Point well taken that VW uses cheap parts......which is why they can offer attractive lease rates that seem almost too good to be true. They do a great job of making the car look good, but I would definitley say that having an extended warranty is a safe investment with these cars. In my case, both of my VW's (a 2002 ... Read More

My GTI came with CD/cassette in dash standard. Edmunds rated the GTI 2nd out of 6 coupes. And that was the 2001 model, for 2002 VW has jumped from 150hp to 180hp, added side curtain air bags, more standard equipment(CD,16" alloys) and has a better warranty. Edmunds 2001 0-60mph figure of 8.5 is high since I have seen 7.1 - 7.6 for the 150hp engine everywhere else. Maybe edmunds did not turn ... Read More

A very safe car(and I must say is very fast with 180HP turbo)is the 2002 VW GTI 1.8T hatchback. It has regular airbags, side impact airbags, and even the latest side curtain bags to protect your head. Add in the excellent crash test score, standard traction control and ABS and you have one safe little car. Safety is important, but luck is even more important in an accident. I pick up my indigo blue GTI in a few days. MSRP was $20950, I paid $19,750: base model with sunroof, monsoon audio and cold weather package. Once I test drove one and felt the silky smooth power rush with the high quality interior, I was drooling. Even though the upcoming VR6 motor option will have 201 hp, I think the 1.8T is just as fast due to lower weight, plus its ... Read More

I just purchased a 2002 GTI 1.8T (Indigo Blue, beige leather, 17" wheel pkg, luxury pkg) and am enjoying the car. This is my first VW (or European car for that matter) so I'm getting adjusted to some of the nuances. I do have a couple of questions for current GTI owners about the car: 1) I only have about 600 miles on the car, but am noticing a low pop ... Read More

Looks like VW is getting their priorities right for a change. I've been hoping for a GTI with more power and fewer luxury items - I don't want or need leather or a sunroof. The 1.8T in the GTI/Jetta is Transversely mounted compared to the Passat (B5 platform) or the Audi A4. For 2002, the 1.8T will be putting out 170/180 HP. All that VW did was up the boost the turbo is putting out. - Anthony

Also noted the 2002 model year changes on Vortex. Glad to see the Euro 24 valve finally making its way to the States, but sad that there will be no 4-motion. 201 hp is a lot for a front-driver to handle, especially given the relative sloppiness of the Golf platform, sports suspension or not.
