    Sorry but all the electrical problems, blown coils and broken regulators, abs recall of the mrk IVs had nothing to do with preventative maintenance. Those were all related to poor engineering. I hear andres as my BMWs have been bad but my 2001 Jetta was scary awful.

    This post actually bums me out. Even though I own a Honda now, I have owned more VW's then Hondas, a 1987 VW GTI, a 1998 VW GTI VR6 and a 2001 VW GTI 1.8T. (The worst of the bunch). I actually loved VW's until the reliability issue roared its ugly head. That is why I will probably never own another VW.

    Yeesh, a 2001 VW? That was the worst year for VW reliability. Ever since then, VW has been gradually improving. At least, though, the new GTI's for sale in America are made in Germany instead of Brazil. That should help correct a lot of the problems. ;)

    For every ones information, I have owned 3 VW GTI's in the past. A 1987 GTI, a 1998 GTI VR6 and a 2001 GTI 1.8T. All three were fun cars initially. However, all had reliability issues.     As a former 2001 GTI owner I can attest to the fact that it was a piece of garbage. Electrical problems (Alarm, Door, Starter), Coils replaced THREE TIMES! I will NEVER buy another VW.

    Is there any sign that reliability at VW has improved over the last couple of years? I certainly hope it made some changes after its quality reputation plunged (well deserved!) in 1999-2001. Is there anyone considering either the MazdaSpeed3 or 2006 GTI?

    If you use the recommended VW 502.00 spec synthetic oil - you have a much better chance with VW honoring the engine warranty for sludge in case something does go wrong. If you continue to use 5W30, you are playing Russian Roulette.
