thanks for the advice allhorizon. i agree completely with one exception ;-). had i not driven the mark V gti,i woudl have loved the mark iv. there is absolutely no comparision. none! however, i am thinking about buying the car for two reasons: 1) i bought the new body style jetta vr6 in 1999 when it first came out. now, i would prefer do to purchase a vw in the first year ... I bought one of the first mk4 gti's, as in there are two different cars called 1999 GTI VR6 and I got the later one. There was no 1.8T at the time, although I more recently bought a subaru wrx and I must say I hate turbolag, I'm much happier with my bigger vr6 though I haven't driven a 1.8t. the engine is a great engine so far as I can tell I've got 54K on my gti and not a hiccup ... I had a 1992 GTI (got stolen) bought a used 87 16v, bought really nice Yokohama AVI 55i 205/55ZR14 tires, then sold it for a 1999.5 VR6. My realization that the tires wouldn't fit the VR6 didn't come until after I bought the car, so now I have these really nice tires that I have no use for. I hope everyone understands that not only are the VW GTI's hard to find at a dealer, factory replacement parts are extremely hard to get. I cracked up my 99 GTI on Dec. 15th and I still don't have it back because of problems getting factory replacement parts!!!
