Toyota Prius vs VW Golf TDI

  • Re: REAL-WORLD DATA [backy]

Written by: schong on Feb 16, 2010 12:54:23 PM

Amazing how the Prius could be so gosh-darned unreliable yet be one of the top 5 most reliable cars as of spring 2009 per CR's surveys. Also the "most satisfying" car to own per those same surveys. Also the best for used-car reliability. I notice how you left out the 2009 MY. Was that because there were only 137 complaints that year? You also left out the first two years of ... Read More

I randomly picked 2003 Golf and came up with a total of 20 complaints. And you are comparing that to 969 on just the brakes of the 2010 Prius. I will be surprised if CR has the nerve to rate the new Prius even worth looking at. I also found recalls for all VW cars from 2001-2006 and it was for a total of 13k vehicles. TMV (true market value) is an elusive number when you are dealing with VW on a TDI. Right now they pretty much have this diesel car market all to themselves. I know there are a couple of other options, but all upscale' from the Jetta, Golf and Beetle. It's a market that is ripe for Ford, (they already have a couple of great little diesels in Europe), Honda, if they want ... Read More

I think you are trying to play verbal games which is fine. But I don't see any data that says Toyota will build anything in their Tupelo plant in 2011. All I see is it is on hold. June 10, 2009 Toyota broke ground on the $1.3 billion Tupelo plant in 2006 to produce Highlander crossovers. Last summer the automaker delayed the project and then later changed plans to produce the ... Read More

Oh yes and did I forget to mention that the Prius has the highest ownership satisfaction among all cars. If you look to your right you will see the 2010 Prius and the current customer rating. It has gone down. Prius topped out in customer satisfaction with the 2006 MY. While the only current VW in the same class the Jetta TDI has gone above the Prius in customer satisfaction. I ... Get a diesel! You get more zip, 40-50 mpg, and it will run on biodiesel (even treated used ff grease). Best to get 2005 1/2 (first half of 2006 before the ultra-low sulfur engine). I installed a HHO system in mine and although the fuel mileage is the same I have a RACE CAR! The engine will last forever and it purrs very quietly. You must not be reading the same Consumer Reports I am. Consumer Reports only has reliability ratings for one year of the Golf diesel--2002--which rates it as average (open circle, no red) overall, same for engine major, solid black (much worse than average) for engine minor, solid red (much better than average) for engine cooling. There's more data for more years for the near-identical Jetta diesel, which shows a very gradual ... Read More

We had a diesel Rabbit back when... Anyway, I am thinking of "trading in" my 2006 Chevy Uplander minivan for a diesel Golf, maybe a 2003? As soon as I can scrounge up a used Chevy Astro van (mine died and I couldn't get another right away) I would like to ditch the new minivan and get a diesel VW. I just moved to Switzerland from the East Coast of the US and have been car shopping for some time now. Most recently I've tried several Golf Vs with different engines. The 1.4L TSI is a gem and I'm sure the 170 HP version is even better. I also tried a Golf+ which is based on the Golf V with a slightly roomier MPV style interior. This one had the 2.0L ... The City Golf is a great deal for sure, at least from a price perspective. I priced one out on vw.ca and, fully equipped with everything except alloys/sunroof, it is about $4000 less than a similarly equipped 2006 Golf from last year. I was seriously considering trading my 2006 Corolla, until I browsed through this forum. Almost every Golf post concerns reliability issues, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair advice, or dealer annoyances. ... Read More

Written by: gregs on Sep 20, 2006 8:29:13 PM

VW Canada has decided to bring back the Golf, and sell it along side the Rabbit. The rather amazing thing is that the soon to be available City Golf will sell for $3,600 (Canadian) less than it did in 2006, although it is substantially the same car. There will also be a City Jetta, also reduced in price.

I just got a 2006 Golf GL 5-speed manual and at 70 mph the tachometer registers about 3600 RPMs. That's about 1000 RPMs higher than any other car I've owned running at the same speed, even cars with less horesepower than the Golf, and seems excessively high. Is this normal for a Golf, or do I have a problem? Thanks for any responses.

The unavailability of TDIs is due to sharpened emissions regulations, while at the same time the low sulfur Diesel (that is necessary to implement the low emissions features) got delayed introduction in the US. Blame your government, not VW. Low sulfur Diesel and low-emissions technologies have been available in Europe for many years, now.

The diesel will not be available until one year from now for the model year 2007. I guess there will be a wait. Oh well, save your money, they are NOT inexpensive.

If the price (and weight) of the Golf keep rising and the MPG remains low on the 2.5L 5-cylinder, VW is going to continue to suffer from low sales. Don't expect many TDIs to come to the USA either. If fuel economy and a hatchback are important to you, other manufacturers will be bringing them to the USA in early 2006, e.g, the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa. Both offerings will ... Read More
