Review of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

  • Looking for a cheap, functional, fun-to-drive car? The Golf offers all three, though the departure of the four-door turbo takes away some of the fun.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.

  • Cons

Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • What's New for 2002

The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI 2dr Hatchback (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

We bought this car new, after the dealer went high and low trying to find one. It has 175000 miles on it and is by far the lowest-cost joy of a car we have ever owned. Going for 300,000+! Only the two-seat Honda Insight tops it for freeway-driving economy and this has no multi-thousand- dollar battery battery bank overhauls looming in the future!

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI 2dr Hatchback (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

I have had absolutely no problems with this car during it's 68,000+ miles. Very comfortable on long trips and my 17 year old loves it. Fuel economy ranges between 42 and 53.7 mpg.

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI 2dr Hatchback (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

I really enjoy this car and i am glad i got this car. Not only was the price very nice, but it is very well worth the money. ALthough i got new tires, the handling with the origial ones was also very good both in handling and in grip. This thing really does well in corners, on ice, rain, and dirt. Cornering is very nice, and the fuel economy is spectacular.

Awesome diesel (tdi)

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI 2dr Hatchback (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

Great driving car. Smooth over bumps, good bit of body lean in turns but feels very sure footed. Torque makes you feel like you're driving a much more powerful car. Highway ride is a nice, tracks straight (autobahn heritage), eats up twisty roads, steering feels great. We traded in a 6mo. old Civic. Civic was roomier, better basic transport. But for a fun refined driving machine, this is it!

Well kept secret

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI 2dr Hatchback (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

As a first time Volkswagon and diesel owner, this car gets two thumbs up. Zero problems, all fun. Incredible mileage(45-50mpg), surprising power, quiet and no smoke. Everyone who has ridden in it is completely surprised when I announce it's a diesel. The car handles well, smart interior design, firm but comfortable seats, 6 air bags, roomy for cargo and elegant hatch-back styling. Exterior fit and finish is supurb. Doors thunk, not clink. This car is designed to a very fine increment. After a year, if asked what the downside to owning a diesel is, I would have to say 'NONE'. Total surprise. This is a great car and I love it.

67000+ and counting

Vehicle: 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI 2dr Hatchback (1.9L 4cyl Turbodiesel 5M)

I purchased my 2000 Golf GL TDI 5 speed new in March, 2000. The odometer now shows 67k+ miles, 2/3 at 65+ mph. The only service has been routine oil changes every 10k, using fully synthetic oil. No problems of any sort, and I still average 50 mpg. This car does everything well; very good acceleration and handling, excellent cargo capacity, a plethora of safety features. The overall performance is so good, when I first test drove a TDI, I asked the salesman if he was sure it was a diesel! Farfignugen works!
