The blue-tinted sidemirrors were standard on some VWs in the early 2000s. I am not sure when they were dropped... but I know that my Daughers 2001 Golf has them and my 2003 Jetta does not. As for the sound you are hearing... Are you sure it is not the serpentine belt sqeeking a bit? Perhaps if we knew which engine you have, we could be more helpful.

I have a VW Golf Hatchback, year 2001. The boot recently stopped opening - completely locked. I have been informed by some other VW Golf owners that this may be a manufacturing fault to do with the rear window wiper / washer bottle leaking and slowing rusting the lock up. On top of the battery on ALL of the MKIV VWs is the power-distribution. Basically, the '+' side of the battery is broken up (distributed) to various wires. There may also be some fuseable links (fuses) included in the Power Distribution.

Anybody actually doing 10k oil change intervals?
I have a stick shift, 2001 Golf, and it is close to 4,000 rpm on the tach at freeway speeds. Even at slow freeway speeds I feel I must be in fourth gear and want to upshift. I'm looking at several 2000 and 2001 1.8T four door Golfs. They all are autos and loaded and have low milage. One is a 2001 vw certified pre-owned 6,500 miles. I just spoke to two local VW dealers. I'm in the market for a 2001 Golf GLS, automatic w/ luxury package. I'm planning on buying next week. One dealer quoted me $17506, and other quoted me $17300 (he said this is wholesale pricing, and therefore could only give me wholesale pricing on my trade-in). Been looking at a level 4 exclusion warranty (covers wear and tear damage). It looks like its going to cost me about 1100 for 5 yrs 75k zero deductable. The "blue book" and edmunds.com trade-in values for my Golf are between $12,600 and $13,600. A comparable 2001 Golf GLS with luxory package, CD and auto transmission is probably around $18,500 I'm guessing. My sister, also a lawyer but not the one I contacted, also thinks VW is low-balling me with their offer. Yes, they did call me and left a message on my answering machine at my office.
