This top-of-the-line Volkswagen CC VR6 4motion Executive is a compelling sedan. It offers contemporary styling inside and out, competitive performance, honest comfort and generous equipment. But the steep price and below-average fuel-efficiency make us consider other choices.
PerformanceCombining crisp acceleration, powerful brakes, confident and sure-footed handling and all-wheel drive, this coupelike sedan offers better-than-average performance for its family sedan class.
This venerable V6 is powerful (240 hp) and smooth. Extra credit given for the seamless 6-speed automated-manual transmission that helps it to 60 mph in under 7 seconds.
The heaviest CC gets the most robust brakes in the line. We saw average stopping distances and good fade resistance at our test track, plus intuitive pedal feel in everyday driving.
A good balance between comfortable, lightly weighted steering for low speeds and tighter, sporty response at higher speeds.
It's when you consider the modest handling of other family sedans that the CC really shines. It feels, and behaves, like a sport sedan in comparison.
From the effortless acceleration and confident brakes, to the responsive-yet-untaxing handling, the CC Executive exhibits superb drivability.

Contoured and heated front seats (massage for driver) are exceptional for its class. Rear buckets also are supportive, but the new center seat is more a kid-perch than a full seat.
Sporty and controlled, but not in a bothersome and busy way. There's ample suspension travel and tire-sidewall cushioning despite the standard 18-inch wheels.
Typical V6 quietness at idle with some engine snarl during acceleration. Quiet running at freeway speeds, with just a bit of side-mirror wind noise.
InteriorSound ergonomics, adequate interior space and generous cargo room are offset by problematic rear ingress/egress and limited seating capacity.
Logical placement of all controls, intuitive steering wheel buttons, plus a modern and clever touchscreen with redundant hard buttons as well.
The front seats are slightly lower than most competitors, but not enough to cause a fuss. The sloping rear doors and roof can present a challenge for rear-seat passengers, though.
Despite being categorized as a compact, the interior feels spacious and roomy. The standard glass roof helps with a feeling of airiness. Fine for four, but tight for five occupants.
Rear visibility is problematic, so the standard rearview camera and parking sensors are welcome. Adaptive bi-xenon headlamps are standard, but blind-spot monitoring isn't available.
Adequate interior storage space. The trunk is generously sized with a wide opening and shrouded hinges. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split, plus there's a ski pass-thru.
ValueThe Volkswagen CC Executive balances on that tight rope between an exceptionally well-equipped family sedan and a modestly equipped entry-level luxury sedan. The value question is one of perspective.
Build Quality (vs. $)
You get the same tight-drum build quality at the bottom of the CC range (for almost $10K less). But the materials in this top-level CC are slightly better.
The Executive trim is essentially loaded with every available CC option: Premium audio, navigation, reverse camera, heated seats, sunroof, bi-xenon headlamps, etc. all standard.
At this price ($42,660), the CC Executive steps on the toes of almost every all-wheel-driven entry-level luxury sedan, and it's a worthy competitor.
There's no getting past the physics of propelling a 2-ton all-wheel-drive sedan. EPA says 17 mpg city/25 hwy. Expect 20 mpg as we found on our test loop.
With a basic warranty of 3 years/36,000 miles that includes roadside assistance, the Volkswagen CC's coverage is not as competitive as many others in the industry.
The CC comes with no-charge scheduled maintenance (changing your oil, rotating your tires, etc.) for 3 years/36,000 miles. But VW has a checkered reliability record.
Fun To DriveDynamically speaking, the CC VR6 4motion is very good. That makes it fun to drive. Its contemporary looks and confident nature are undeniable. Whether you value those things in a family car is a question worth asking.
Refreshingly low-impact, surprisingly sporty and never out of its element, the CC VR6 4motion Executive always feels capable regardless of conditions.
You'll feel like you're either driving an inexpensive luxury sedan or an overpriced Volkswagen.
