If it only does it when the motor is cold, it could be a cracked exaust manifold. From 2001 to 2005, they are known for that. When the car warms up, the manifold expands and seals the crack and the noise goes away. Hope this helps. The exaust manifold is warranty for 3 years 60k. Its totally unacceptable for an engine to die at 48K. If Honda doesn't give at least 50% back to you, I'd never shop Honda again. Show them a picture of your nice new Ford or Toyota and be sure to let everyone know what your Honda did for you. As for me, I have a 117K on my 2001 Civic LX and my only problem thus far has been my suspension- about $850 worth of it around 100 K miles. ... Read More...

We are considering a new car to supplant our 2001 Civic EX. It's got 170,000 miles and has had a flukey engine sensor fail twice six months apart, unfortunately both times in the presence of in-laws. I own a 2001 Honda Civic HX. At about 50,000 miles I had the shutter too and I had the start clutch replaced. You don't have to rebuild the entire transmission. I have actually had my start clutch replaced twice. First time was in warranty, second time it wasn't in warranty and ran $700. Read More...

You've never owned a Hyundai, have you? I've owned two--a 2001 Elantra that is now nearly 8 years old, and a 2004 Elantra. The 2001 is owned by my sister now. She loves it and says it still drives and looks like new. And it has been very reliable. Those batteries can be a bummer. This Question isn't pertinent to your problem but couldn't get the question out any other way. Did Honda make the Civic HX after the year model 2000?? I haven't seen any references to a 2001 or later HX so you guru's on Honda products please let all know if they did?? I notice there are several references to 5-speed tranny problems ... 1. Is the cost of upkeep greater on the Civic GX over any other new Civic? Yes, somewhat higher. The fuel filters need to be replaced. THe price is coming down as the service technicians realize that they only need to change the insert and not the entire filter housing. A few hundred dollars every 30,000 miles. 2.Cost of driving?
