Dodge Dakota Engine and Underhood Questions

Re: exact engine information [cindy215]

Dusty is correct. The 5.2L (318ci) was replaced with the 4.7L semi-hemi in the 2000 model year. I do not think it is possible for your 2001 to have a 5.2L from the factory. Trivia: The 4.7L was first available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 1999. Starting in 2000, it was also available in the Dodge Dakota. (Replacing the 1960s-era 318ci) Read More...

Pistons

I am rebuilding the engine of my 2001 3.9 liter dodge dakota. I have to replace 3 pistons and connecting rods, this will make me have 3 old pistons and 3 new pistons. Will this matter in the performance of the engine when we I start running it again? I'd rather not spend the money to buy all 6 new ones but would it be worth spending the extra money replacing all of them or ... Read More...

Dodge Dakota Electrical Issues

Electrical Problem

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota and recently my son pulled a trailer that had a short in the wiring. The headlights won't work, the electric door fob and locks won't work, the headlights glow very dimly when we turn the engine off and the intermittent wiper function won't work. Kinda weird huh? I'm afraid the short in the trailer wiring has caused some malfunctions in ... Read More...

Dodge Dakota Climate Control

climate control on my 2001 dodge dakota 4x4 quad cab

I only get hot air out of the dash vents no matter what setting I put it on. It will not switch to the floor vents or the face vents, I get no change in temperature out of the vents no matter what temperature I turn it to or if I turn on the A/C, Fan switch works just fine. Can anyone tell me what it might be or what I may need to change out. Read More...

Dodge Dakota Engine and Underhood Questions

Re: Engine Failure on 2001 4.7 [fourdogs65]

I have a 2001 dodge dakota with the 4.7 with 204,000 miles and counting. I change the oil every 5000 miles with no oil added between changes. I would rebuild the engine if you choose since it has been proven because 170,000 is not too shabby. I usually take "sage" advice from others like your mechanic friend with a grain of salt. Dodge Dakota Tow upgrade

Dodge Dakota Tow upgrade

I have a 2001 Dakota Quad cab, 3.9L auto, 3.55 axle ratio which according to books can tow 4500 lbs. I want to buy a travel trailer an coincidentally my transmission broke last week and is being rebuilt as we speak. My question is, can I change the 3.55 axle ratio to say a 3.92 to get up to 4900 lbs of tow capability. I'm already adding a transmision cooler and thought ... Read More...

Re: 2001 Dodge Dakota ignition won't turn [jac11]

After reading @ the "mallet solution", I just pushed the key with a little more force into the lock and turned it normally. It turned. Subsequently the lock works fine. But I'll make a note of carlocksandkeys.com just in case. Read More...

Re: 2001 Dodge Dakota ignition won't turn [kdulaff]

I ended up taking the ignition lock out, cleaning it and lubing it up, but it began doing the same thing in a few days. Finally broke down and bought a new ignition lock cylinder from carlocksandkeys.com for around $40, very quick turn around with 2 day shipping. Easy replacement on my '01 Dakota, now I have 2 different keys, one for door and one for ignition, not big ... Read More...

Re: 2001 Dodge Dakota ignition won't turn [jac11]

I had same prob with my 2006 Dakota this am. Key does not turn (like it's the wrong key!) I hope the "mallet" suggestion works. This truck is new (only 10,000 mi) I saw another post where a guy had a locksmith fix it...twice! Read More...
