Dusty is correct. The 5.2L (318ci) was replaced with the 4.7L semi-hemi in the 2000 model year. I do not think it is possible for your 2001 to have a 5.2L from the factory. have a 1999 dodge dakota v8 5.2 fuel pump wouldn't turn off when you shut the truck off unless you unhooked battery got the point where fuel pump wouldn't even turn on checked relays and all fuses replaced the fuel pump and still turn on the key and don't hear fuel pump come on and truck will not start. can some please help Read More...

I have an 02 Dakota, 4.7L V8. I have a similiar issue with the transmission getting stuck in park. I just figured out that the relay is what is causing the bind. Typically it will bind if you try to shift without depressing the brake first. Once it binds it seems almost impossible to get it to release. my 1999 Dodge Dakota start fine but after running a minute or two will act like its running out of gas, it will backfire, and create a smelly exhaust. This occures for maby 15 seconds then you can drive the truck for hours with no problems unless you shut it off for a few minutes.
