My family has a total of 4 Malibu cars ranging from 1998-2003. They have between 70K-150K miles now. All good cars except, they have all hade the same ac problems. The ac control module keeps flipping on and off in all of them. It can be fixed for a little over $300, buy it will break again. If I'd have based my main need on handling and power I would've bought an Altima. Gotta love the feel of those cars! GM has published TSB 01-06-01-011B, which covers all GM engines 1998-2006. The TSB states, if the oil level stays above the add line for 2000 mi (3200 km), the engine meets guidelines for oil consumption. If oil reaches the add level in less than 2000 mi (3200 km), and vehicle is still within the original warranty period, they should diagnose and fix the problem. ... Read More...

Actually this car was originally my mom's. She wanted a new car, and I had a 1994 Dodge Shadow that was a piece of crap, so I signed over the Shadow to her, and she traded it in for a new Ford Taurus and I made the payments on the Malibu (1998). As crazy as it sounds, thats what 1998-2001 malibu owners have reported. Usually its while stuck in traffic, going at a slow speed that the car's anti theft system kicks on, completely shutting it down. I had seriously considered a Camry. My last car was a Chevy Prizm (Corolla twin), and I liked the Toyota motor. The Camry is a great car with a price much better than the Accord. The same engine was used on some Chevy Cavaliers and I have a Chiltons manual for that. It seems as if the job is quite straight forward and should present no difficulties.
