One of the most important considerations in buying a used vehicle is whether the original manufacturer warranties are still in effect or whether, based on the age or mileage of the vehicle, the manufacturers' warranties have expired (or will soon expire). Normally, the drive train warranty provided by the manufacturer will have a longer term than the "basic" warranty, i.e. the warranty that covers the rest (namely, "most") of the vehicle.
Some vehicles are sold as "certified," which means that the dealer is offering a no-cost warranty, and sometimes a warranty will be offered by dealers for non-certified vehicles. However, these warranties are usually short-term, often for as short as two years. Most private party sales do not include any form of enhanced warranty.
Depending on the used vehicle, its age and mileage, and how long you intend to keep it, Edmunds recommends that you investigate the availability and cost of an extended warranty from a reputable warranty company. The price for these warranties is usually far less than what dealers charge for comparable (or sometimes worse) coverage.
