Power loss at 4000 RPM

I have my 1995 530i (small block 3.0 liter V8) in at a local indie shop. They have a factory trained BMW mechanic who is having problems solving a problem...I get sudden power loss at about 4000 RPM. If I get up to that RPM, the power loss is complete until the revs fall, and the check engine light comes on. Any thoughts as to what to look for, things to check/try? My mechanic ... Read More...

Mine has 128,000. I just got it, and I hope to keep it for a couple hundred thousand more! I don't own one, but I have a friend who ran his 1989 535i past 300,000 miles. Just follow the maintenance schedule to the letter and you should have no problem reaching your mileage goal... Read More...

Many folks, myself included, would advise that you simply "self insure" by taking the money that you would otherwise spend on the warranty and set it aside for unscheduled repairs. The E34 5 Series are well regarded in the BMW community. The 2.5 six cylinder is long lived and problem free, aside from a need for a water pump at @60000 mile intervals. I would definitely have the car inspected by a qualified BMW tech. I'd also want to see the service history. Has the oil been changed every 7000 miles or so? 1995 540i skip and whining

1995 540i 140000 miles. Starting skipping or rough idle at start and idle, upon increase in speed the skip goes away, and then sometimes it stops at idle but not for long. Have had the gasket replaced 2 years ago that lets oil on the spark plugs (sorry, don't the correct term). Removed and replaced the spark plugs without sign of oil this time. Anyone else have early problems like this? The SRS light illuminated on my 1995 3 Series two days after I took delivery back in November 1995. The dealer reset the SRS system and the problem never returned. The car has been essentially problem free since. I just saw a 1995 BMW 525i with 53,933 miles on it. They are selling it for $8,995. What do you think? Good deal? Do you think this is a long lasting car?
