Your question about why I chose the Aveo is a fair one, so I will try to provide an answer. Before I do however, I must note that your initial assessment is that of it being "quite possibly the worst car currently offered by anyone in the USA" and a "penalty box", and as compared to a Yaris as being "(W)orse. Much worse." That's undeservedly harsh. Before buying I test drove ... Read More

According to Wikipedia, the xD and Yaris are built on the same platform, so it can't be all that big. "The xD is... essentially a mildly elongated five-door Toyota Vitz. The Vitz is a three-door marketed in the U.S. as the Yaris. Thus, the five-door Yaris was not offered in the U.S. market when the three-door and sedan were launched; however, as of 2009, the five-door Yaris will be offered in ... Read More
Of course, it wasn't until 2009 that Toyota gave the Yaris 6 standard airbags and ABS, which would put it on a more equal footing with other models. And of course the IIHS data is for 2006-08 Yarises.... I drove a rental Versa recently and would put to the absolute bottom of the class except for Aveo. I would take a Fiesta over a Versa. But you are right, the price ... Read More
Forecast: Small-car flood to swamp residuals December 14, 2009 - 12:01 am ET If you want a vehicle that will hold its value, buy a big SUV rather than a small car, the experts at Kelley Blue Book say. Automakers, under pressure to meet tighter fuel economy rules, are about to flood the market with so many small, fuel-efficient vehicles that the residuals of those vehicles will fall, predicts Eric Ibara, ... Hi I was driving through the snowstorm Dec 7, 2009, and because of an accident ahead that completely stopped all traffic moving decided to take the backroads. A bad decision as the backroads were not ploughed. I ended up sliding sidewards at less than 5 mph and came to rest at an angle on the guard rail. The front passenger side bumper and fender got dented due to the weight of ... Read More
I agree that the 2010 Yari (plural? lol) are more expensive because they have just arrived, and the dealers are not paying interest yet on their 120 day interest-free loan from Toyota to acquire the cars for their lots. Any cars left on the lots after 120 days will start to cost them money, and that's when the discounts come. I was able to get my 2009 Yaris 4-door auto with ... Read More
When can we expect to see the 2010 Yaris on the market? Soon, I would guess. Between the 3 Memphis dealers, they only have 1 new 2009 Yaris left in stock. They ran low about the time the "Cash for Clunkers" program started. How many Yarii could Toyota have sold if they had had any inventory? All 3 dealers stocks are extremely low on all models. Wolfchase has 95, Performance has ... Read More

Well, same April very sincerely quoted me $11,300 for a 36 months lease on MSRP 15,755 - 2009 Yaris 2dr with power package. And claim it has 54% residual. So you were very lucky they sold you this car for a reasonable price because ... Read More
Tustin Toyota. Not only did I negotiate the price before getting there, but they were incredibly friendly and NO pressure to upsell on warranty, etc. April Conner from the internet department helped me.
All 2009 yaris are standard equipped with front/side rear airbags. ABS is also standard, thre is no traction assist/stability assist available ,yet. Why don't you log on to Toyota's web site and research these things yourself ?
I do have the same issue with my 07 Yaris I took for the car to Northridge Toyota The third time on June 5th 2009 They want to charge me because my car is over 52,000 my warranty is up and they told would charge me to diagnostic fee for the same issue on the car has been repaired under the warranty twice.I declined, and I escalated to Toyota Motors They get ... Hey everyone. I have a 2009 Yaris Liftback. I bought it in Oct of 08. I live in California. To restart sales, Mini turns to incentives April 20, 2009 - 12:01 am ET With sales plunging for the first time, Mini USA has violated its no-incentive rule for the past few months with a low-interest financing offer that the brand continues to sweeten. BMW AG's premium small-car brand lowered its incentive to 1.9 percent for 36 months through this month. And starting in April, the company offered the same rate ... Read More
the Smart Cars president is saying this test is so violent that less than 1% of real-world crashes would be equally bad: Dave Schembri, president of Smart, says, "If you carry this to the nth degree, we'd all be driving 18-wheelers." I would buy the Yaris in a heartbeat to replace our Chrysler Town & Country if it was available in a 5-dr hatchback. Your wish is Toyota's command! http://www.edmunds.com/new/2009/toyota/yaris/101082171/prices.html Thanks for helping to prop up the economy a little by buying a new Yaris! :)
The same can be said for the 2009 Toyota Yaris's. It's hard to find any under $16,000 now, with some as high as $18,000. I paid full MSRP ($12,500) for my first one in 2006. You would think that GM, Ford, and Chrysler about to go out of business or something.
Shawn, Interesting blog ! Looking forward to more. :) Excellent pictures, and the way you write indicates professionalism also. Very nice! We are looking to add a gas sipper to our stable, and still undecided as to which "Make" and be it a sedan or a hatch back. . Thus some questions. I just saw that for 2009, the Yaris will get ABS and 6 airbags standard. That is great news. Also, the new 5-door will start at only $13.3k with automatic. Here's some info and photos: http://www.netcarshow.com/toyota/2009-yaris_5-door/ IMO the 5-door is easily the best looking of the Yaris family. If they could just move those gauges to where God intended gauges to be, it would be getting close to perfect. ;)
Will the suits at Toyota wake up and offer ESC as an option with the 2009 Yaris, at least with the "S" models of both the sedan and LiftBack? Anyone have a clue? Peace!<-AladdinSane-<- -
Won't be too long now (2011?) all new cars sold in the US will have ESC, as mandated by the Feds. I would think some car company, Honda or maybe Hyundai, would step up and want to be first to offer ESC across its lineup. Both companies will be very, very close to that for 2009. Honda is closest, in that it will offer ESC on at least one trim level ... Read More
bottgers... I'm not sure of availability in your area, but Toyota offers the Yaris in "S" form which has a tach...there's NO cruise control, though... I do agree with you about Toyota and their apparent indifference to the Yaris 3dr, in both base AND "S" models...Cruise would be nice, a power sunroof, a Pioneer audio system similar to what Scion has in its three lines, and Vehicle Stability Control would make ... I think Toyota is expecting people who want customization to go to Scion, relieving them of having to do much in the way of options on Corolla or Yaris. Remember, you can get Nav on the xD too. Of course, that's got even LESS legroom... Personally I'm looking at the Elantra (either the SE or the upcoming Touring) because I insist on getting ESC....which eliminates Sentra, Altima, the current Fit, Civic, ... Read More
Toyota's biggest problem with the Yaris, is that they didn't bring over the much more useful 4-door hatchback... Scion had the nearly identical xA, so I guess they didn't want the overlap.. I saw a Yaris 5 door overseas and the Scion xD IS a Yaris 5 door with most things the same except it has the Corolla engine and a different dash, same mechanicals, different body style. The 5 door ... Read More
Toyota's biggest problem with the Yaris, is that they didn't bring over the much more useful 4-door hatchback... Scion had the nearly identical xA, so I guess they didn't want the overlap.. Now that the xD has replaced the xA, and moved up in engine size (and ugliness), they should bring in the 4-door hatch, and the FIT would have some worthy competition...
"Now that you mention it, I've been seeing more of the Yaris 2-doors around, too. Not that long ago, they were a very rare sight, although the sedan seemed to be a hit right from the start" Originally, Toyota chose to build only 20% of the Yarises as hatches, anticipating that would be the demand from the public. Now that they have realized the error of their ways, they are busy ... Read More
So have I, and apparently they are doing well, because Toyota recently changed the production mix for Yaris to produce more of the hatches.
Hmm, give it rear discs and double wishbones and this thing could have been the perfect reincarnation of the Civic SI of old, albeit in 5-door form. Should sell well as the market downsizes. In fact, I think it will increase its sales pace by another 50% in 2009 over the 50+% it is already up this year over last. As long as Honda has enough production capacity, that is. Over ... Kudo's, I think you have made a brilliant choice in the 2009 Honda Fit. As is typical of Honda, if they really focus on the goal they have chosen, they are capable of building a really great car. This is one of them. A quantum leap compared to the earlier version, which is one very good car as it is. When this car is released for sale in the U.S., Toyota ... Read More
Also, Honda is less paternalistic and allows you to turn off traction/stability control programs, which Toyota is loathe to do. I'm not sure that statement is entirely fair. The 2009 Corolla allows traction control to be disabled. My 2002 Sienna has a switch to kill it too.
How easy was it to get your Yaris (hatch or sedan?) with those options? I mean, did you have some selection on the lot, or did you need to "order" it and wait for it? Also can you tell us what kind of deal you got on your Yaris? The Yaris interests me due to its high fuel economy and good crash test results with the side bags/curtains. If availability with ... Word is that the new Scion xD 5-door (replacement for the xA) is based on the Yaris platform. That makes it unlikely that Toyota would bring the Yaris 5-door to the U.S., since it would compete directly with the xD. Toyota did say they would have VSC standard on all vehicles by 2009, but I don't recall them saying anything about standard SABs by 2009. I hope they will move more quickly than that on the SABs, since Yaris and Corolla are just about their only two vehicles sold in the U.S. that don't have SABs standard, and a new Corolla is coming soon.
You have hit it right on the head: cars DO have one heck of an emissions system, while your lawnmower has none. Your lawnmower causes as much emissions when running as 1000 ULEV cars, or something like that (I saw the number once, but have forgotten it now - it was big though). This is why California will begin having emissions standards for small-engined appliances like lawnmowers and leafblowers in 2008. ... Read More
the 2007 Hyundai Tiburon incorporates some minor cosmetic changes only. The Tiburon for 2008 (or is it 2009? There's been some conflicting reports coming out that are confusing data at least)is going to be new from the ground up. It is bigger and very, very rounded up front. It is an interesting looking design, though I think I like the current Tibby's design more. Design differences can grow on you, though. ... Read More
Crazy as it may sound, I haven't heard a single complaint about the lack of cruise or the tach from anyone thus far (over 200 customers minimum).
