Thanks for sharing your perspective. I agree with a lot of points you made, particularly on the Yaris' interior. I hate the center-mounted gauges also, and I think some of the controls esp. the HVAC controls are cheap-feeling. The Yaris also is sluggish with the automatic. I do like the relatively smooth ride of the Yaris, and it has decent rear seat room in the 4-doors, or with the rear seat ... Read More
Well, that's the rub. If you want a good ride, 4 doors, and 35+mpg, you're down to a very narrow list. But there is a list. ;) The Fiat 500 is 2 door only and as small as a jellybean. It's like an estate version of a Smart car. And just about as slow unless you get the Abarth (which we won't in the U.S.) I also removed a ton of ... Read More
My 2007 Yaris hatchback comes with a slot for the cabin air filter. It is located behind the glove box. I have two on order. Paid about $20 for both of them from an Ebay store. I got the second one for my daughter's 2008 Yaris Sedan.
Seems a little high to me. Check on Ebay and see what they are not selling for. Chuck Hutton Toyota in Memphis is advertising 2008 rentals with less than 3,000 miles for $10,990. It's definitely a buyers market right now. With gas prices going up though, you have to think that might end soon.
To restart sales, Mini turns to incentives April 20, 2009 - 12:01 am ET With sales plunging for the first time, Mini USA has violated its no-incentive rule for the past few months with a low-interest financing offer that the brand continues to sweeten. BMW AG's premium small-car brand lowered its incentive to 1.9 percent for 36 months through this month. And starting in April, the company offered the same rate ... Read More
My 2008 (6 months old) 5 Door Yaris YR Hatch ran out of fuel 2 days ago. The display said I had 1/2 tank of fuel but the tank actually ran bone dry. Got this info from another forum: Yarisworld.com forum I took my car to the dealership and watched them reset it. 1. With the odometer on trip A and the ignition off, press and hold the reset button. 2. Turn the ignition on (no need to start the car) and wait for it to start blinking. It will count down and when it's done, it'll be reset. Also, finally found on page ... Read More
Replying to: micweb (Jun 27, 2008 4:30 pm) Manual transmission. Use of aircon as needed. No deliberate intent to not use, but it is not on all the time I drive. Yes, probably very little driving over 70. I am not necessarily opposed to driving over 70, but in the Yaris, it seems like 65-70 feels fast enough for comfort. What most people are unaware of, is the fact that when ... Read More
HI all, just got back from a test drive of a 2008 hatch three door, I was not expecting anything good, it was between Yaris or the Fit haven't driven the fit yet but, WOW, the Yaris was great, build quality was exceptional, low road noise, no rattles, manual shift was smooth shift/clutch was great. On the Cobalt XFE, the big difference between the 5MT and 4AT on fuel economy is interesting. That is pretty rare these days. It's more common for the MT and AT numbers to be pretty close, or even for the AT to get slightly better EPA FE numbers than the MT. I wonder what Chevy did to the MT coupe to allow it to achieve those really high FE numbers--much higher ... Read More
I just got the answer on how to get an owner's manual for your 2008 Yaris. The main Toyota publications number is: 1-800-622-2033. The book is $15.95 plus tax and shipping. I'm still going to look around my house one more time before I order it.
What is it with Consumer Reports and their bad mouthing of the Yaris? Does anyone here (even Backy) believe, in the Subcompact Class, that a Honda Fit Sport MT rates a 75 on a 100 point scale and the Toyota Yaris hatchback MT rates a 36, tied for last with a Chevrolet Aveo LT? It is noted that the Edmunds consumer ratings on a 10 point scale has the Yaris at ... Read More
This guy needs to stop listening to those who claim that they will get better than sticker mpg. Actually it's easy to exceed the fuel economy numbers printed on the new car price sticker. It's all in how you drive and where. It's important to remember that the EPA fuel economy numbers are the result of testing in a lab. Not driving the car in real world conditions. Thus vehicle aerodynamics ... Read More
My experience regarding how roomy (or not) a subcompact is, directly relates to the shape of the various interior parts. Such as the shape of the door panels, if there is a console, or armrest. The shape of the floor, where the dead pedal is (if there is one) and the fore & aft positioning of the steering wheel. Setting aside subcompacts and just talking cars in general and the manufacturers ... Read More

Fit: Honda was late to report results due to technical difficulties, but Fit is certainly up by ... Read More

As you regular readers know, I have quite a collection of cars from the extreme exotic car end of the spectrum, Ferrari F50 & Bugatti Veyron to the opposite extreme 2008 Yaris Hatchback S. Kudo's, I think you have made a brilliant choice in the 2009 Honda Fit. As is typical of Honda, if they really focus on the goal they have chosen, they are capable of building a really great car. what would a base Mini Cooper be like to live with on a daily basis? Actually, the Yaris Sedan with 5 speed manual is rated at 29 city and 36 highway under the 2008 criteria. Even Toyota's web site has those numbers. 2 MPG highway isn't enough to break the deal for me. As for the fit, I think the "excellent resale" value has yet to be proven. It hasn't been on the market in the U.S. long enough to prove itself in that regard. And ... Read More

First of all please understand that when I say advantages, that it's simply from my viewpoint based on my personal preferences. Regarding my thoughts on the Yaris Coupe vs Corolla Sedan, after looking up the stats on the EPA site, I find the interior room is only two cubic feet larger on the Corolla. That was before I went to see a Yaris, and get in and drive the car. Because ... Read More
Regarding the American media raving over the Fit and all but ignoring the Yaris, first one must understand the publishing business and the influence of the advertisers. I think that you got a very good deal on that car. Maybe because the 2008's are coming out shortly. What was the MSRP?
www.toyota.com has information on the 2008 Yaris. It looks pretty much the same as the 2007 Yaris; no 4 door hatchback yet.
Has anyone had a sunroof/moonroof, power or otherwise, installed aftermarket on/in their Yaris? Particularly the LiftBack model? I'm curious to know. Toyota, again, has no such option available for the 2008 versions, not even for the new S model liftback. I wonder why? Hmmmmmm... Peace!<-AladdinSane--
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. I am very impressed with that sedan and I'm getting around 20mpg city and 30mpg highway. You have hit it right on the head: cars DO have one heck of an emissions system, while your lawnmower has none. Your lawnmower causes as much emissions when running as 1000 ULEV cars, or something like that (I saw the number once, but have forgotten it now - it was big though). This is why California will begin having emissions standards for small-engined appliances like lawnmowers and leafblowers in 2008. ... Read More
Honda is a much smaller company than Toyota and they don't have the capacity to adjust production immediately. When the new Fit plant in Indiana opens for the 2008 Fit model, production won't be a problem. I wonder if Toyota will move Yaris production to North America if sales hold up.
While I agree that it is different in some specifications, it's got far more in common than just displacement. It shares more in common (the Lotus 1.8) with the Celica GTS than the Corolla configuration of course, but it's still essentially just the same Toyota (1ZZ) engine. Toyota sold rights to Lotus (for the 2ZZ) You could bore out a Yaris 1.8 (sill the 1NZ btw), supercharge it, etc., but it ... Read More
The Corolla is downright awesome for 5-year old model! The problem is, as I think we discussed earlier, it's extremely dated (grandmamobile). But if Toyota's recent track record is any indicator of what the 2008 Corolla will be ... Read More
Yes, Toyota/Scion/Lexus use A/B/C to designate production runs. It's not a "second-gen" though. Just built later in the cycle. the 2007 Hyundai Tiburon incorporates some minor cosmetic changes only. The Tiburon for 2008 (or is it 2009? There's been some conflicting reports coming out that are confusing data at least)is going to be new from the ground up. It is bigger and very, very rounded up front. It is an interesting looking design, though I think I like the current Tibby's design more. Design differences can grow on you, though. ... Read More
