2014 Toyota Tundra

What's New for 2014

The 2014 Toyota Tundra is fully redesigned.

Introduction

The Toyota Tundra earned its stripes in the full-size pickup category long ago. Its blend of brawn and reliable backbone made it equal to -- and in some cases better than -- its American rivals. But competitors caught up with, then surpassed, the Tundra with more sophisticated interiors, modern technology and tougher styling -- elements that the redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra aims to address.

The new Tundra's resculpted exterior features an integrated hood and grille, and a larger front fascia that wasn't small to begin with. A higher hood, three-piece lower bumpers and squared-off wheelwells infuse the Tundra with slightly more menace.

The powertrains available in the Tundra remain the same. A base 4.0-liter V6 engine makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque and pairs with a five-speed automatic transmission. A 4.8-liter V8 produces 310 hp and 327 lb-ft, while a 5.7-liter V8 makes 381 hp and 401 pound-feet. Both V8s send power through a six-speed automatic. Befitting a workhorse, the Tundra remains capable of towing up to 10,400 pounds, the only drawback being a slightly choppier ride.

The 2014 Toyota Tundra will offer standard and long beds, and three cab styles: regular, double cab and crew cab configurations. The Tundra will come in base SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum and a new 1794 trim level. Each gets its own unique grille treatment.

The SR gets standard Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera and the Display Audio system. The SR5 adds a chrome grille, foglights, satellite radio and optional 18-inch wheels. The Limited gets chrome accents and 20-inch wheels, along with heated leather seats, a navigation system and Entune smartphone integration. A TRD Off-Road package is available for the Limited and includes 18-inch wheels, dedicated off-road tires and performance springs and shocks.

Acknowledging that some people just want a big truck to roll around in, the Platinum trim focuses on "urban and contemporary," says Toyota, and includes perforated black leather seats, chrome and brushed metallic trim, and a 12-speaker audio system.

The new 1794 trim level is named for the former San Antonio ranchland that the Tundra's factory now sits atop. The 1794, meant to evoke a traditional Western heartland lifestyle, comes with saddle-brown leather upholstery with suede accents and LED running lights.

Inside, the Tundra interior is revamped with a new dash design that brings audio and climate controls more than 2 inches closer to front occupants. The front seats offer additional travel and crew cab rear seats can now fold up for additional cargo room. Safety features include blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on premium models.

The 2014 Toyota Tundra goes on sale in September and pricing will be announced closer to the release date. Check back for a full review of the 2014 Toyota Tundra, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice as it becomes available.
