DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Handling and steering are very good. The widely available 5.7-liter V8 is strong and very drivable, and produces a tow rating of over 10,000 pounds. All Tundras get standard four-wheel ABS, traction control and electronic stability control, an industry first.

Comfort

RATING

The Tundra's driving position is adaptable to a wide range of drivers due to a tilt/telescoping steering column and a wide range of seat adjustments. Ride is well controlled and isn't overly firm. The cabin is well insulated and quiet. The climb into a 4x2 is a little higher than the domestics because the 4x2 sits at the same height as the 4x4.

Function

RATING

Dual-zone climate control, unique in this segment, is standard. The major interior controls are laid out logically and work well. Certain controls have been sized to operate easily with work gloves on. Every cab has been enlarged this year, and each offers abundant storage. Toyota's new CrewMax cab has the most rear legroom of any truck. The seats slide fore and aft and recline generously. The new Tundra bed is now in line with full-size dimensions, and three lengths are offered: 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet and 8 feet. A rearview camera can be purchased with or without the optional navigation system.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Some think the interior and exterior styling to be over the top, while others like the striking impression the front end makes. It is nontraditional, but visibility, wind noise and other functional aspects of the design are very good. Assembly quality is top-notch, and the interior controls move with precision.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Towing Capable The Tundra offers its 10,000-plus-pound tow rating in more cab and bed configurations than the competition.

Cargo Hauler Three cabs and three beds give the Tundra buyer a lot of choices. All of them are at or above the largest in the segment.

High Performer Toyota's new 5.7-liter V8 is the strongest in the half-ton class. Standard ABS and electronic stability control make it unique.

Off-Road Ready The 4x4 version might be too big for the tightest trails, but good clearance and a capable 4x4 system make this a good choice for most severe outdoor uses.
