2005 Toyota Tacoma 4dr Double Cab PreRunner V6 Rwd SB (4.0L 6cyl 5A) 4dr Double Cab PreRunner V6 Rwd SB (4.0L 6cyl 5A)
Bought used in 2008, have literally driven it across the country. (Truck has about 110k miles on it now) Avgs 16-25 mpg. Took it tailgating in the southeast with 4 adults and gear and got 25 mpg on highway in "mountainous" terrain of western NC and SC. The truck has been worry free over about 15k miles. The power from the V6 has been more than adequate with hauling rocks, dirt and plants/trees for homeowner "fun" and around town. I haven't towed with it. 60# dog fits in back of cab nicely as the seats fold flat and have a robust back. The cubbyholes behind and under the rear seats were borderline genius (they have become more common now, I think). The power outlet in truck bed is handy.
Nice blend of SUV and truck features. TRD Off Road pkg looks nice (no fake scoop!) and offers locking rear diff (mine is 4x2) and ground clearance. Space and cubbyholes for things and people. Truck bed composite material (fine for my needs). Paint has held up very well as has underbody. Resale was good
Fully box frame - shimmies over bigger bumps. DIESEL ENGINE PLEASE! Stereo in 2005 approaches awful. Bigger bed (deeper if not longer offered for TRD Off Road - only allow short bed). Better headlights. Wider rear door openings. I'd like a more utilitarian version offered w/ good mechanical "stuff"

This is a HUGE improvement over the earlier Taco's that were much smaller and had little wiggle room inside. Now Toyota has a real mid-size truck!! Incredible power that is just too tempting to ignore - will smoke most of 'em off the line. Beautiful styling inside and out, with some fine tuning over the years these will be a perfect truck!
Great power, easy to get in/out, generous back seat room, plenty of storage behind rear seats, great stance for a 2WD - looks great with only a 3" lift!! Very good steering and braking feel, has the feel of being classy and rugged at the same time - a great rig for the price. Thanks Toyota!!
OK, now the fine tuning that it needs: the heater fan is loud, the rear headrests completely block rear mirror view (I removed the headrests), the steering wheel telescopes very little, no light for key ignition at night, needs small light for window controls or a finger sensor for drivers window.

I have to say, I am so impressed with my new truck. I have been driving BMWs for the last five years and coming out of a 40K car to a truck I was not expecting the luxury drive as well as the power and handling. WOW! What an extraordinary driving machine. I love it so much. The TRD package is worth every penny! I am absolutely impressed with it and can't wait to plan some fishing trips.
TRD sport package, erogonomics, spacious, powerful engine, and great handling.
Leather interior, navigation, and more gadgets on the inside.
The best truck I ever owned, I have about 15000 miles on it now and its still feels like it brand new. Only problem that I had was the rear springs were making noise but all they need was a little grease and now they're good as new. I highly recomend this truck to anybody, I think it's the best truck out there right now.
The looks, the storage space in the cabin, the power.
What's not to like about the newest generation of Tacoma . I love my CC 05' ! Plenty of room ,easy exit level, great interior and quiet. Plenty of power from the v6 and you can smoke lots of other trucks and cars with the power to weight ratios ,can be very quick for a truck. After driving Ford F150's and Rangers -I am totally sold on this truck ,to me it is the perfect size (no longbed with the CC style-please!) I would highly reccommend this truck -it deserves the sales numbers it is getting .
Engine is tight and powerful .Right size in and out .Great looks ,makes the Ridgeline look like the ugly step sister ! Nice and fun to drive too.
Door handles on interior are same color as dark door panel ,hard to find at night .Shock rubbers can bottom out with some bumps and a few people in it ,not too seriously though . A/c fan a little noisy .
this truck is amazing. After having a 92 toyota pick-up and trading it in for a car, i really missed the feeling of a truck. This truck is everything I missed and more than I could have hoped for.
Increase in power is pleasantly suprising.
Using proprietary stereo speakers make it hard to customize.
I'm a medical technician and have to drive it anywhere and quickly, also I don't like to spend a lot in fuel.
Fuel economy, looks and comfort are my favorites.
I guess rear discs brakes and an mp3 player would be better.
This is an awesome truck. The power is great. The TRD package comes with a rather stiff suspension which is great for off road but makes it a bit bumpy on the road. Overall this has been an awesome truck.
Awesome power from the 4.0 liter V6. Feels like a truck.
Don't get the TRD package if you like your ride soft.
Former full size truck owner that likes the quick steering, easy parking exceptional ride, performance of the V6, 4.0L and outstanding styling. A high clearance truck to take to the dirt roads, hauling gear or a fancy resturant with family and friends. I reviewed a number of mid-and full-size trucks and like the sporty styling, large space in the back seat of the Double Cab as well as extra storate under and behind the seat. I like the composite bed and tie-downs with optional bed divider and net to keep objects from sliding around. I have nerf bar steps for my 5'3" wife. And, installed a trailer hitch.
Styling, quick steering, smooth ride, power.
Four wheel disc brakes. Rear window defroster.
This is the best truck I've ever had. Looks great, runs great and everyone wants one. Increased horsepower and the composite bed make this the best truck on the road.
Back seat has plenty of room for the kids.
The dash air vents (middle) cannot be pointed away from the driver and blow into a common area.
What a great truck. Its beatiful, fun to drive and will probably last forever. Great acceleration, nice braking and handling. I got the upgraded JBL stereo and it sounds great. TRD sport package with the scoop on the hood looks killer. Fuel mileage is pretty good. I do a lot of in city driving and usually average around 18mpg, probably would be better if didnt like letting all horsepower loose. Its just so darn quick that I have to open it up every chance I get. I'm heading to Florida this week so I'll test the highway mileage to see if I get the advertised 22 mpg.
Exterior styling, nothing on the raod looks like it, aggressive looking hood scoop, JBL stereo, acceleration and braking, you name it, it has it all. Handy little compartments everywhere.
AI power rear window would be a nice bonus. Valves are a bit noisy, but I understand that is typical with Toyota. About 2-3 more inches of leg room in the back seat. Cheaper accessories. $500 for the rail mounted truck box! Automatic up and down on both front windows. Shiftable automatic tranny.
This is great tough truck with exceptional performance and handling with very good fuel economy 21 mpg. This is a rugged strong truck.
Performance, dashboard layout and display.
Running board & bug deflector should also be standard. Use Xenon headlights.
Have only had my Tacoma for 3 months now, but have taken my family of 4 on a 2200 mile trip to Washington DC and it was fantastic!! Plenty of room for both boys in the back with the videos and games, plenty of room up front for my wife and I. The mileage was 2mpg better than the sticker both in town and on the hwy. The truck is definitely a headturner. If I could afford another one for my wife, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
I opted for the Short bed so it fit in my garage, still have about 18" left over. I traded my 2003 Corolla for the Tacoma. Based on the research I had done the Tacoma always came on top. Handling: Has excellent acceleration, corners and stops nicely. The interior is pretty confortable and feels like a small SUV or a car. So far I have averaged 21 MPG, but I don't get on it too hard! I have added Toyota running boards, they look great and the Off RD package adds a lot. Oh, the 24Valve, V6, 281 ft.lbs of Torque is ready to haul. I decided on the Tacoma for reliability. We are planning a long trip next week. Cheers to all who have one.
The torquey engine and the ride complement each other coupled to the good looks and reliability. Ergonomically simply layed out. I love it! And the dealer was very accomodating in my trade.
The seat nor the steering adjust up and down. I don't need it but my wife will.
Great truck -- Great vehicle. I traded in a full-size Chevy Silverado, and I can now say after putting the first 5000 miles on this truck, I made the right choice. It drives right and it looks good! After a 3000 mile road trip, I could not be happier with my choice. I added a cover for the back, nerf bars, and a trailer hitch -- I'm set!
I really like the room I have inside, and the V6 and automatic transmission give the vehicle the get-up and go that I expect.
This is an exceptional vehicle for the price. The 6 cylinder engine and the torque gives it alot of power. The ride is smooth. The gas mileage on the highway is a litte over 20 mpg while traveling between 65-75 mph. The sliding cargo divider for the bed is a great option. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone. Only draw back is the unavailability of a toneau style bed cover with pistons. There is no where to attach the cover with the design of the composite cargo box,
Slide rail system for the tie downs and cargo divider
Edge lighting for the power window controls...blower and vents for the a/c for the backseat for the 4 door models and an electronic retracting rear window
overall best pickup toyota has ever made
smooth ride and handling-good looks
needs a little help in the A/C. Not cool enough
I haven't had it that long yet however I just took a 2000 mi round trip towing a trailer and a bed load. The truck performed great. Plus it's nice around town.
The engine is powerfull for a 6 cyl and i really like the looks of the TRD sports package I got.
The interior lighting is hard to see during the day. The locks don't chirp like most new cars so I'm always wondering if the locks worked. I purchased the roof rack, the factory rack isn't adjustable and it needs to be.
So far, an excellent truck. Ride is great in the highway. Fuel economy is excellent with myself filling the tank every week and a half and I use the truck to go to work everyday with an avarage of 40 to 50 miles per day.
Space inside and all the extra compartments underneath the back seats.
Make all the hoods sport hoods like the one's in the X-runner.
I am very impressed. I drive a 2005 Mercedes 320 CLK Cabriolet for my everyday driver, but this truck is becoming my favorite ride! The wife & I "fight" over who will drive it to work. We got the speedway blue, with the TRD offroad upgrade, and get compliments wherever we go. Love the Toyota quality & reliability. I expect this truck to last us for many years.
lots of storage & cupholders. Can tow more than I'll need. Enough power to quickly get up to highway speed. Powerful AC for extra hot Las Vegas summers.
GPS Navigation I've grown used to in my other cars.
I did my homework and looked at all the competitors even full size. The new Tacoma is head and shoulders above all others. The ride, size and power combination is perfect for driving in SoCal. The truck looks and drives great. All of my friends are jealous. Toyota's reputation speaks for itself. It truly is a world class truck. Buy one you will not be disappointed!
245 HP! Looks bitchin', hood scoop and big tires give it a really nice prerunner look, stereo sounds great, seats are comfy and interior is roomy yet it isn't too big.
Power seats that raise/lower. My wife is real short and has trouble seeing over the dash and hood scoop.
Worth every $$$. Love the sweeet ride! It rides more like a luxury car than a pickup. With this truck you get the best of both worlds - classy and rugged at the same time. Cant stop licking my chops when i first laid eyes on this beauty. I'd give up my wife first before giving up on this truck. Thank you TOYOTA !!
The folding hard surface rear seat. The TRD suspension. The ABS brakes. The smooth and seemingly effortless POWER.
Running boards should be a Standard feature and not an OPTION.
At 5-10 grand less than similarly equipped "Big" trucks, it is truly a great value. Ride is firm but comfortable, handling is tight and the interior noise level is low. I will post again as time goes on.
AC outlet in the bed! Wife loves contoured armrests in the rear doors.
Needs cassette in the dash so I can operate my XM radio w/o the FM Modulator! Also like to display a vanity plate in front and the dealer says no license plate holder is available. What about states that require both front and back plates? (Tags for you Suth'ren folks)
Great truck with solid reputation. Aggressive body style with engine to match. As my 3rd truck I am surprised by how solid this truck performs.
Engine response, body style.
Better gas mileage. Radio controls on steering wheel should be standard. DRL should also be standard. Slightly smaller steering wheel or larger tilt option.
Recently purchased a 4Dr Dbl Cab PreRunner SB. Have filled up w/gas twice already and I'm getting just over 19mpg in stop'n'go city traffic. Not bad compared to my old Silverado. Plenty of power and a very comfortable ride. I'm 6'1" and have plenty of room, even in the back seat! Interior quality is far better than the '02 Silverado that I traded in. Absolutely love the truck so far.
Interior room. 245 hp V6. Under seat storage. Poly-carbonate bed.
Overall, the driving is spectacular. it's very comfortable and easy to drive, which was unexpected because i'm a girl. It was a little scary turning the corners because it's a tall vehicle compared to the small car i was driving before, but i just need to remember to not drive too fast and to turn the corners softer. the fuel lasts longer than most other trucks do, but maybe that's because it's a bit smaller than the other larger trucks out on the market.
i LOVE the shocks. because it's a prerunner it has the awesome shocks on it, so i can go practically anywhere in it. the height of the truck is also really perfect for me. i don't have to step up into it.
perhaps there could be some improvement on the interior design. there are too many cup holders and not really any place to place anything without having to open up the middle compartment. also the placement of the clock is awkward. the steering wheel and wiper switch are in the way.
This is the perfect midsize truck, even though it feels like a fullsize when it's driven. The build quality is not to be beaten, especially by Dodge, Ford, and GM. The interior materials are much nicer than pretty much any truck out there. In the short time that I've owned the Tacoma, I can't find one thing wrong with it. I expect to own this truck for a very, very long time.
JBL sound system; Power; Interior Comfort; and TRD Sport Package as a whole.
Widen the driver's seat just a bit. The sport seats can be a little bit narrow for those of us with large frames (the seats in the SR5 are just fine).
This is the first Toyota I have ever bought and I am so happy with it, I love to drive it. Everytime I stop somewhere people always have good compliments about it. It in itself is a conversation piece. It is a solid truck that you can see and feel the quality of the construction. I will be a toyota buyer from now on.
The four doors and the cabin space. The back passengers even have leg room.
A locking tailgate.
This truck has got to be the most comfortable and most fun ride I've seen in a truck. Best truck for your money.
Steering controls, great shocks, smooth ride, big back seat, light and fast, easy to drive, great sound system (JBL).
Only improvements would be having the power window auto up option - would have been great. Also the defrost on the side mirrors and unfortunately the sub in my JBL system seems to be blown or defective. Other than that I love it.
Just bought this truck with TRD Off Road pkg. So far no problems. Im 56 yo and I love it...and so do the kids. Got bed extender with clear mask and tint all around. This truck is awesome and built to last. Toyota really did its homework on the redesign.
Hood scoop, digital compass/temp, super white paint, overfenders, the ride, Downhill and Hill assist control
Power seat, a little more head room in the front.
This is my second Toyota pickup. Toyotas are so dependable. They run and run with very few breakdowns. The 4.0 liter V-6 is very powerful with excellent gas mileage. I have 2000 miles on my truck and have not found any problems with the truck.
I like sitting up high in my PreRunner and still have the economy of a 2 wheel drive. Most folks don't need 4-wheel drive.
I don't care for the automatic gear selector. I would rather have a forward and back gear selector with button like the older models of Toyotas.
I was looking for a reliable, comfortable truck that I could use as a daily driver in the city as well as for the "typical" uses for a truck. I have a dbl cab V6 A/T SB 4x2- TRD sport package and the ride is smooth and much less jarring than most other trucks I've driven. The engine is powerful and smooth, but a bit noisier than I expected. Gas mileage is a bit above average for other trucks in this class. The interior fit and finish is great, and it is nicely laid out and very functional. Sport seats are extremely comfortable and the back seat has plenty of room for passengers to ride along for more than just a quick outing like many of the competitors.
Engine power and drivetrain, styling (interior and exterior), ride (and I must say decent handling for a truck), expected reliability, expected resale value, comfort, rear cabin room in the double cab, extra storage compartments throughout truck, bed rail system, power outlet in truck bed.
make sunroof available, make side and head airbags available like competition, insulate the cab more to reduce road noise, maybe "tone down" the hood scoop that comes with the sport package as the sun glares off mine and it can be quite annoying, maybe a hybrid to improve gas mileage?
This dual cab mid sized is just what this consumer needed. The hood scoop makes it look kinda masculine. It is masculine. Have got 7,000 miles on it and everything is good. Got 20.9 mpg last weekend overall on trip to Charleston. Enjoyed the drive.
Styling, performance, interior, ride and suspension, mileage, and the compliments it receives.
I guess if they put leather seats and gave driver power seat then it would have to be named "Lexus".
I have owned a Nissan Frontier for years and was satisfied with it (I test drove the 05 Frontier and was not satisfied with it, especially with the gas milage the sticker displayed). I test drove the Tacoma (non-TRD pkg) and was impressed with the results, so I purchased one. What amazed me was the horsepower and torque it puts out for its size. I use 91 octane and average about 21 mpg both city and hwy. Overall, I'm very pleased with this truck.
Horsepower and gas mileage.
On a non-TRD package, the ride could be smoother. However, I know it's still a truck and will drive like one. The Nissan Frontier was a smoother ride.
I have wanted to have a Tacoma truck for quite sometime. I decided last month that it was the time to get one. So, I traded in my 150 Ford Truck 2000 and got a Double cab, 2wd, PreRunner 2005. It is just what I imagined it to be. Looks great, feels great and just the right size. Not too big, not too small. So, far it has been 3 weeks I am very happy with it. The truck runs very smooth and thus far I have had no problems. I am very satisfied with what I purchased.
Several places to storage tools, underneath the seats and on the sides of the bed. I like the 4 full seats very much and the suspension.
Perhaps the sound system could have been a little better.
This is a fine truck. But the 5 spd. automatic transmission needs reprogramming. You get to 5th gear too fast. Then, there's no pickup when you need it. The cruise control downshifts two gears to regain the targeted speed, putting the tach at redline. This needs reprogramming also. Other than that, I really like the truck. The size is good. The orange dashboard indicators are hard to read during the day, especially the clock and temperature. Bright white would be better
Fold down back seats. Good tie down points in the bed. I like the moveable tie downs as well.
Reprogram the transmission and cruise control. Decrease engine noise in the cockpit. Change the dashboard lighting to bright white.
Owned a 04 Ltd Dble Cab and traded in for 05 Sport TRD. There is absolutely no comparison in any category. It drives like my wife's '05 4Runner. Test drove 05 Frontier-no comparison at all.
Interior design is well thought out and SUV like. Cabin noise is at a minimum. All around refined features vs 04 model
I just upgraded from a 2002 tacoma, prerunner, TRD. That truck has nothing on my 2005 prerunner. Everything I wished I had on my old truck, this truck has. A more powerful engine, larger interior and bed, and redesigned interior. I chose to go without the TRD, and I am pleased with my decision. This truck is so smooth it rides like a luxury SUV. The 4.0 V6 is just enough power to get me in trouble, and allows me to pass the slower and bigger domestic trucks with ease. This is my third toyota tacoma, and my favorite by far. There is no comparison.
The 4.0 engine is awesome. The restyled interior is exactly what I was looking for. And the handling ability was a nice surprise.
It sounds minor, but I don't like the rear fender flare. Its almost like toyota tried to hard to make it different.
just bought my truck at the begining of March. Great truck. looks much better than the competition. I love the power and the size of the truck. Not too big, not too small.
overall look of the body style, roomy cab on the 4 door. style of the shifter.
need a better sound system. the fenders need to be painted with paint that is just as shiny as the rest of the body. storage compartments in the bed should have locks. need to offer truck in jet black and not only black sand pearl which doesnt really look black.
awesome power, great looks, seats are the best toyota ever made, even the base sound system is better then any other toyota truck.
offer long bed double cab with 6sp trans
Just bought truck yesterday after months of research. Has TRD Sport Package with towing, had to have the rims and limited slip, well worth the $ for. Had it narrowed down between this and nissan frontier; however, toyota won out over because of, room in back seat for my daughter with car seat, more standard features, nice gauge cluster back lit red, adjustable cup holder sizes, and just a bigger truck over all. Have had 4 nissans previously, but now they cost just as much as toyota. researching resale on net found toyota had better residuals after 4 years than competition. And wife thought it looked better!
Overall appearence, nice rims, backlit gauges, firm ride, smooth shifting auto tranny, interior fit and finish, roomy back seat
needs lit vanity mirrors in visors, sat. radio option, power seats, better defrost for side windows and rear glass, place for garage door opener in overhead console, or home link, one touch window up, and headphone hook ups for rear seat, and dual climate controle
Comfortable, handles great, and tows the 20' boat without a bobble. Mileage so far runs about 18 around town and 20+ on highway, and it does it on regular gas. No problems with knocking or missing using the lower octane, although the manual says for optimum performance use hi-test. The 5-spd auto shifts smoothly and quickly. The performance of the V6 is outstanding, if just a bit noisy. Motor Trend gave it their Truck Of The Year Award, and it's well deserved.
Performance is exceptional, and the new look has gotten a lot of nice comments.
Leather buckets would be great. Add Homelink too, if you please.
well I traded in my 04 taco for the 05 and its alot better truck, the better engine with 245 hp is nice better gas mileage than the 3.4L in the 04, everything about this truck is improved from previous not that they where bad but, this is much better ride and comfort
245 hp roominess and exterior and interior style
cant think of any right now
Have put 3500 miles on it in 3 months. Loved every mile so far!! Fun to drive. Very comfortable seats both short and long drives. Getting 18 in city and 22 on highway. I have the lighted running boards that light both the step and under the truck. It sits pretty high so would recommend the running boards for the average size person.
Smooth ride.Looks great.Plenty of room for three kids in back seat.Doors that open back to front.
Emergency flasher is right under radio button and is easy to set off.
We just traded in our leased 2002 Tacoma for the 2005 model and WOW! what a huge difference in design, ride and size. The ride is like a luxury vehicle and the seats are very comfortable with the lumbar supports. My only complaint so far would be the gearshift (automatic) seems similar to that of a manual transmission with the over-down, down-over, movements to change from park/drive/etc. I imagine it just takes getting used to.
"Text" feature on cd player displays artist and song is pretty neat, but so far, the favorite feature would be the bed with the sliding tie-town fasteners and also the a/c adapter. Neat truck!
Fun to drive. Gas mileage better than my old Tacoma. They have done a great job.
Interior design. Gauges and radio.
None at this time.Only had truck a week
Have only had it for 2 weeks but we are very happy! Having owned a Toyota truck from 91-98 and then a Ford Ranger from 98-2005, there is no comparison on quality and design. Toyota has it all hands down. This truck crushes all competition hands down in every category that we looked at and we pretty much drove them all. Bravo Toyota for building the truck that all others will be chasing for many years to come!
Mega Horsepower, sweet interior, great styling, hood scoop, new composite bed design, large rear seat in Double Cab.
functional hood scoop, chrome grill, power opening rear cab window.
I never fill out these reviews, but I decided to based on my experience. I have owned multiple trucks (Ford, & Dodge), but this one beats them all. In addition, the others were all 1/2 ton pickups. I also test drove the Chevy Colorado and have riden in an 02 Dodge Dakota. This one rides much smoother and has a lot more power.
H.P. New style bed, ride
Can't think of any right now. By the way, this truck has two trip odometer's.
I will have to say that I really enjoy the sound of that engine... it is a truly TOYOTA sound... I love my Tacoma... and haven't notice the "bump" problem, but will pay attention...
love it all
leather, sunroof, electric rear window
This truck is fun to drive. It has excellent handling and impressive power. Overall it does everything well.
The best features are exceptional power, great handling and good gas mileage.
The only minor complaints are I miss my 03 Tacoma white dash gauge faces and the daytime running lights
Picked up the 4x2 doublecab with TRD#2 package, and I can't say enough good things about it. The ride is very smooth, and bears little resemblance to the ride on the 04 models. Responsiveness is very good, and handles like a dream. Most use will be on freeways in town, with the occasional foray onto forest roads or across the family farm to hunt.
It isnt a compact truck anymore the 05 has gotten a little larger it has a real aggressive look to it, it runs and drives like a car the v6 has lots of powerand gets decent mileage I have been averaging about 19-20 mpg with trafic, should do beter on the open highway . I was going to get a 2004 but drove them both and with 60 more horsepower it is a wolrd of difference, I got the prerunner with the sport package so it has all of the color keyed door handles and mirrors and I got it in Speedway Blue, a truly awsome color I get a lot of compliments on the truck.
Sport package, the scoop in the hood and color keyed exterior trim, the V6 has lots of power.
Paint the tailgate handle to match body color like the doors do, everything else is great.
I've bought Toyotas off and on since 1982: 82' Tercel, '86 MR2, '01 Highlander, and now the '05 Tacoma PreRunner. The one constant in Toyota's engineering is that it keeps getting better and better. This upgrade to the Taco is no different. They are not resting on their laurels, and clearly want to retain their market share by creating an ingenious double cab with quality and features second to none. After only about 1200 miles of driving, I can tell this truck will be in my stable of vehicles for a long time ... well beyond the time it is paid off.
400W of 110VAC power in an outlet built into the bed. Extremely well designed fold-down rear seats, with plenty of storage behind and beneath. Center console and front console designed for ergonomics. And the new Raceway Blue color just kicks major butt!
Add 6-CD changer and leather to the top-of-the-line PreRunner package. These were the two things in my '01 Highlander LTD that I miss in my new Taco.
