Just a couple of corrections: Actually all 2000 to 2004 Tacomas used the same frames but depending on the location of purchase of the Tacoma in question, you might not have been notified. Notification was based on the particular climate of the initial purchase location and would have been to the initial buyer anyway unless this info. was changed in Toyotas system. If they find any it'll be up by the gas tank where you can't see it; that's where mine was. I got a brand new $11,000 frame job for my 2004 and it didn't cost me a penny. Upon confirmation of rust perforation, Toyota will, at its option, buy back or repair the vehicle. This is a pass fail test. Toyota was very fair, beyond fair if you ask me. My 99 Taco had 170k on it and I got 12k for it. It does not matter what condition it is in, only that is drives and has a clean title. You can get it re-inspected up to 15years out every year as long as they are offering the buy back program. They wont fix it, if it fails you will get a check, if it passes they recoat frame. My 99 is now flat as a pancake and have moved onto 2000 trd 4runner with money in the bank. Miss the old truck but great deal. Rust was found on the frame under passenger door, large hole. Good luck

Well, went to Shelor Motor Mile, Christiansburg, VA and left my 1998 Toyota Tacoma over night for the inspection. They found no rust perforation. They did the rust corrosion treatment and wanted to keep it 24 hours. After the vehicle was there for a few hours, I received another call that there was a crack in the manifold exhaust and it would cost me $518. Since this is not the place ... Read More

Hi, I have a 1999 Tacoma with 54,000 miles in perfect condition. That is until my mechanic found extensive rust. Toyota has my truck, they gave me a loaner. Dealer says they will either replace the frame or buy back. It may take two weeks to get an answer. From reading other posts, it seams the buy back is more likely. That's fine with me. Well, as long as you are satisfied. You know a person does not have any control over this situation that they are put into. And, you have to trust Toyota that they tell you the truth about the true condition of your truck. I own both a 2000 Tundra 4x4 and a 2000 Tacoma 2x4. The good news is that I just go my Tundra back after seven weeks in the shop. When they agreed to buy back any 1994-2000, Tacoma, they also EXTENDED the warranties to 15 years, for ANY subsequent Tacoma, starting in 1999. Anyone with a 2001-2004 who got the 150% KBB would have been early in the program. Buy-back is now available only to 1995.5-2000 Tacomas. 2001-2004 Tacomas get the frames replaced. They have replacement frames for them. Not so with the 1995.5-2000 Tacomas. Toyota is doing the right thing with the no cost frame replacement. Lots of new parts.

I heard the buy back/rust warranty was only for 1995 -2000 Tacomas. In 2001 a different process/manufacturer made the frames.

However at inspection they hammered very hard on frame to the point that they put a dent in the frame on one side at front. I would say go to the link I posted for the Toyota Letter. And get the phone number and call Toyota. You should not be driving a truck that failed inspection. There is also a list of the vin numbers affected from 1995-2000 in that PDF file. Just because you have a 2001 doesn't mean it wasn't manufactured in 2000. Call Toyota, the number is in the dealer letter.

How many pre-2004 Tacomas DON'T have frame rust problems
Anyone have any idea what kind of percentage of pre-2004 Tacomas are passing the Toyota inspections? Thinking about buying something in the 2000-2003 range and would like to have some idea of what I might be getting into. I'm in California and I would have to think that most of the trucks around here are ok, but that's why I'm asking.

Nice to see that I wasn't the only one finding this out. Some dealers did inflate the price. They lost me as a customer after I had 2 tacomas in the last 10 years. I bought a nissan frontier and so far so good. I don't blame toyota in calif., they have stepped up and were very good to me. The dealers suck!!!!

I have a 1997 tacoma which i have had frame rot repairs done twice prior to 3-08. This was pretty costly, about $1,700 , and was needed to pass NH state inspection. Just wondering if anyone else has had frame rot repair bills and was reimbursed for them by toyota?

I've followed the complaints of frame rust since the beginning. It took a while before Toyota announced the recall on the 95-2000 models. If your 01 is still safe enough to drive, my suggestion is to hold off for a bit while Toyota decides what to do with the 01+ Tacomas. Tacoma running rough
My 2000 Toyota Tacoma is running rough on idle. The engine light is on and I get code 300 random/multiple misfire, and 302, number 2 cylinder misfire. I replaced the spark plugs, and swaped the electronic coils in between the spark plugs, but still get the same codes. Can anyone help please?

1995-2000 Tacoma rust problem
I just had my '95 Tacoma inspected at the Toyota Dealer and they didn't find any problems. They think the rust problems are more prevalent in the upper east states where there is more salt used on the streets. I have 2 more years left on the "rust warranty" so I will have my truck looked at again before that expires.
