2005 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited 7-Passenger Fwd 4dr Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 5A)

Review

We got this van 4 years ago and it had 95K miles. It was the xle limited version with all the bells and whistles. Heated leather seats, rear ac controls, pull down built-in blinds, dvd player with separate head phones. Interior and exterior are great. We now have 180K miles and major mechanical has been very reliable on this van. No engine or transmission problems. I have been good at keeping up with the maintenance schedule- oil changes every 4k, timing belt & water pump done, tranny fluid change every year. Problems: expensive & multiple sliding door issues involving clostly motors and actuators going out. Radiator crack at 170K miles, rear coil spring break at 160k.

2005 Toyota Sienna LE 7-Passenger Fwd 4dr Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 5A)

Review

This has been a great van. Bought new in 6/2005 and has over 122,000 miles on it. Only problems were maintenance items: tires, brakes, batteries, timing belt, alignments. Runs just like it was new.

Favorite Features

Ride, drives like a car

2005 Toyota Sienna LE 8-Passenger Fwd 4dr Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 5A)

Review

The internet brings out all the strange reviewers: people claiming horrible experiences and people who use this forum to complain about the dealers instead of the actual product. I have had this car new since August 2005. As of this writing it now has 190,000 miles. There are hard Long lsland, NY miles. The radiator finally rotted out. Is this unreasonable? The lift gate shocks failed at around 150,000 miles. I ordered a pair online for well under $100.00 and installed them in 10 mins. Mileage is very good for a huge vehicle. I still get 18 mpg city and 22 or so on the highway. The exhaust system is still all original. Nothing leaks. No problems with the sliding doors so far.

Favorite Features

Huge interior and cargo area. Plenty of space for groceries and sports gear with the rear seats in place. You can haul all the kids, pets, beverages, coolers and luggage on a long trip. If you need more space the roof rack helps. With the rear seats folded and the second row removed you can lay sheet rock or sheets of plywood flat in this thing. Visibility is outstanding and the headlights throw a good distance in front. The A/C is powerful. There are many interior configurations to fit whatever your needs are at the time. This is a safe car. Traction control and VSC work well. The car has been very reliable, mostly just routine maintenance. Uses regular unleaded fuel.

Suggested Improvements

This van rides like a boat. It could use stiffer suspension. The rear suspension is not independent so the rear tends to "hop" over bumps which can unsettle the ride. Could have used more sound insulation as the interior is not quiet and the tire and road noise really wear on you on long trips. The stereo reception is mediocre and has gotten worse. I have to have the antenna mast checked, I guess. The middle seats are removable but they are very heavy and the removal process is not intuitive. The center console for the driver and passenger folds down but is not removable. The driver seat is not comfortable on long trips for whatever reason. Redesign access to license plate lamps.

Review

Bought second hand in Nov 2012. Owned 2 Chrysler vans before this one. Got this 05 sienna XLE with 97000 all prepped and ready to go. In Dec we went from PA to CA and back in comfort & had a great trip. Van didn't give so much as a hick-up. Got 21mpg average over all. But with 5 adults & lots of luggage I guess that's not bad even though I was hopping for better. just over a year now (mar 2014)with no major problems. Power doors acting up over winter but have learnt to deal with it. will cut cable and run manual if need be. now have 121000miles. Went in for 100000mile services and found cracked radiator. Ouch! If this is the worst that happens I'll still be happy with it.

Favorite Features

Over all I like the 05 Sienna XLE better the our previous Chrysler vans. Over all better performance, handling, ride and comfort. The additional storage and options are also great. There is no reason for anyone to be uncomfortable in this van. Due to all the options, For the first time, I had to pull out the owners manual to learn how to run everything. great turning radius. Kept catching myself cutting corners to sharp when I first got the van. 4 wheel disc brakes work great. Cruise control runs smooth. A/C/heat works great.

Suggested Improvements

Power doors- Poor durability. To expensive to fix. Radiators made of plastic- Bad idea, poor durability, Replacements very expensive. Poorly made parts that are very expensive to repair only result in unhappy customers and poor reviews that result in customers considering other brands next time. no after market parts to beef up and improve handling and load stability, IE HP struts and sway bars without going with expensive air ride systems.

Review

So the engine, transmission and drive-line are still good to go after 145k but what about everything else? To replace the sparkplugs, the engine has to be dropped which is very expensive. We've had a sliding door fail on us and it cost over $2k to repair. The other door is now starting to make a very similar sound. The tires they recommend are from the Camry since the van frame is based off it but the vehicle weighs a lot more so you eat through them very quickly. The rear springs are undersized and loose their life very quickly. Still haven't found a beefed-up/stronger solution yet so the butt is dragging. The automatic doors take a lot of power so batteries are short lived.

Favorite Features

All of the recall notices telling us to take our van in for repair...

Suggested Improvements

You got the engine and transmission down pat, now work on the rest.
