EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Toyota genuinely gets it when it comes to designing a full-size SUV road warrior. The 2008 Toyota Sequoia has all the comfort and conveniences of a minivan and it doesn't drive like a truck. It easily inhales a thousand miles in a day, tows up to 10,000 pounds, and will tackle all but the most punishing trails. In short, it is the primordial sport-utility reborn and remastered for daily use.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Of the two available drivetrain choices, the one to order is the 5.7L/381-hp V8 hooked up to the new six-speed automatic. Combined, the Tundra-derived combo is more capable and more fuel-efficient than the standard 4.7L/276-hp V8 with the five-speed. Properly equipped the 2008 Sequoia can tow up to 10,000 pounds. The new, fully independent suspension provides exemplary road manners and stability. The four-wheel-drive models feature all the proper off-road hardware like a low-range transfer case and locking center diff.

Comfort

RATING

Base models' standard suspension is well tuned for comfort, and optional rear air springs only enhance the smooth ride. Ultra-rigid boxed frame and fully independent suspension do an excellent job isolating the cabin from the outside world. Mega adjustable seating affords best-in-segment comfort. Third-row seat is the best in class.

Function

RATING

Most of our (few) gripes regarding the Sequoia stem from the poor ergonomics of the transcontinental dashboard. Many often used audio and HVAC controls are (almost) out of reach for the driver. Otherwise, interior storage is plentiful and varied, cargo space is voluminous and easy to convert, and though outward visibility can be challenging, parking sonar and a back-up camera are available.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The exterior design may be bland and derivative, but at least it's attractive and well-built. The interior has its ergonomic challenges, but is nonetheless attractive and of an unexpectedly high-quality.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Family Friendly Perhaps the only true eight-passenger SUV, the Sequoia will handle everything an active family will throw at it with ease: rear entertainment/gaming, towing and off-roading.

Comfortable Smooth, quiet, confident and highly refined, the Sequoia never forgets that American families routinely go for the proverbial 1,000-mile day.

Towing Capable Excluding ground-pounding heavy-duty versions of domestic full-size pickups, the Sequoia out-tows them all with a 10,000-pound rating.

Off-Road Ready Low-range transfer case, locking center-differential, off-road package, six-speed automatic now has a manual-shift gate.
