2011 Toyota Prius Two 4dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Review

Purchase was purely a economic decision for me without much emotion. Extensive economic analysis with detailed spreadsheets yielded the Prius II as the most economic choice for my 70 mile daily commute consisting of 60% city 40% highway. Factored in were resale values which indicate lower depreciation than reported for Gen 3, significant improvements in reliability over 2010 model and long term increase in gasoline price at 10% / year. Also in consideration was the 10 year battery performance check done by Consumer Reports which indicated the NiMH battery showed no measurable degradation in 10 years and 200K. I think newer Li battery technology will take several years to mature and match

Favorite Features

Lowest total cost of ownership for those with long commutes. Proven battery technology and drive train. Beltless design in engine and transmission. The transmission is not a typical CVT with belts or chains, it is all solid gears. No clutches or friction pad materials to wear off like in standard automatic or manual - automatic transmissions. Toyota seems to have corrected every problem reported in the 2010 model, the radio how has perfect reception, Bluetooth (called BLU Logic) is available in type II, rattles eliminated, the Gen 3 has now matured and is a solid product.

Suggested Improvements

Reduce noise in cabin further. There is still too much tire noise and low frequency chassis noise from resonance induced from going over bumps. Make the interior plastic and fabric more resistant to scratches and stains. Make outside paint more scratch resistant, add memory for 8 TPMS senors to allow easy winter tire changes without reprogramming or make the system self learning when new TPMS detected. Change back ground color of LCD from green to white. Shorten warm up times so engine enters S4 stage more quickly. Stop dealers from selling over MSRP. With current plant shut downs in Japan, dealers are almost auctioning off the vehicles with prices thousands over MSRP as starting
