This is a $60,000 car with a $25,000
price tag. Outside takes some getting
used to, but inside is like a state of
the art luxery car. The high tech
accessories are fantastic. The 2004
Prius will surely go down as a classic
car in the league with the Ford Model
A. It is clearly the best car choice I
have ever made.
Favorite features are hard to
identify. There are so many
superlatives: quiet ride, nimble
handling, super efficient gas mileage.
The navigation system, the bluetooth
handsfree phone system, the extra
airbags, and the climate system are
just some of the superlatives.
The only improvement needed is how to
make more of these cars available.
They will revolutionize the automotive
I was lucky enough to buy one with only
a 2 week wait. Reliability is great.
Mileage has been a bit less than EPA;
my average was about 46-48 during cold
weather but has risen to 50 mpg in the
spring (and is also highly dependent on
tire pressure-I neglected this and ran
out of gas once; luckily the battery
had enough juice to make it to a nearby
gas station. I don't recommend trying
this.) The hybrid really shines in
bumper-to-bumper traffic, when battery
power alone is enough to creep along.
It handles well, although it is
buffeted by strong winds.
Acceleration is reasonably quick
(faster than my wife's Honda CRV).
Having the last laugh on big SUV
drivers as I drive by gas stations. If
there's a politician brave enough to
suggest a gas tax, I'll vote for
Headroom in the rear seat is limited.
I'm used to using heat & AC controls by
touch only, so the touch screen system
takes a bit of getting used to. A
sunroof would be nice. The A pillars
seem a bit thick and sometimes block my
Toyota claims 61 mpg town, 51 hwy.
Actual in my '04 Prius after 5K miles
is 43 town 49 hwy. A 30% difference on
town driving is fraud. The overall
mileage is good, but toyo doesn't
deliver on their claims.
The car is very unstable in a cross
wind. Just like a '64 VW. And I have
stability control. It can really be
scary with big trucks tossing you
Seats are very uncomfortable after
about an hour. Toyo, you can do better.
Rear view thru back window is crummy.
Engine noise is LOUD when passing or on
very steep hill. Sounds like it's going
to blow up.
My wife really likes the car. Just
don't expect Toyo to tell the truth.
Quite a bit of room inside for a small
car. Back seats fold to make the dog
Either tell the truth or tell me how to
get the advertised mileage.
Fix the crosswind instability.
Put a visor over the display screen,
can't read in the sun.
