My 2004 toyota prius does not start. The light comes on the sreen, you can play the radio, blow the horn and do everything but the car cannot start. What happened was that, I was driving in traffic and I saw smoke coming out through the front (bonnet). We parked and checked and realized the coolant pump under one of the front headlights was burnt. We replaced the coolant pump and put ... Read More
My 2004 Prius has 69000+ miles and has been very reliable. I did pay quite a bit for taillight assembly when the LED section failed. I seem to remember it was around $400. I had to replace the battery (not the hybrid one). Other than that,, I think the car is a good one to "run until the wheels fall off." I just succumbed to a third party 4yr/60,000 mile warranty ... I have a 2004 Prius. This has happened to me infrequently but more than once. 1. Make sure you get the software upgraded by your Toyota dealer. That should be a no cost upgrade. 2. My Prius (2004 with 40000 miles) display has partially failed. A skeleton display appears on hot days with no data (MPG, miles driven, etc.). The car runs normally with the air conditioning and radio working (more or less). None of this happened before over the ... Read More
I read that they redesigned the braking systems for the 2010 Prius. I was told that toyota is going to recall 2004 to 2007 prius's for a problem with some sort of pump. Anybody heard anything about that?
I have a 2004 with 60,000 miles and have never had anything but a very slight surge. The 2010 has disc brakes frond AND rear but that should not cause your problem. Bring it to Don at Bighorn Toyota in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and he'll fix it for you.
One reply to this says "who ever told you Priuses are heavy is crazy". Well Priuses are heavier in the front of the vehicle than other compact cars. Hybrids have a gasoline engine, an electric motor, Heavier battery, and a transmission all supported by the front axle. Early Priuses came stock with and required required XL Tires (Extra Load). A tires weight capacity is effected by the size of the tire ... Read More
Hi, The ZVW30 Prius, 2010-current, has the redesigned brake system and the recent recall to get rid of a rare, brake pause. If it was that simple to detect, why didn't Toyota catch it before putting a dangerous vehicle on the road. It should have been quite obvious with any slick road testing. I can see this being a very tough decision. If you need the versatility of a hatch then go with the Prius. If that is not an issue then you have to weigh other factors. It is not readily available at the dealers and there was a few weeks wait at a few dealers to get it. It looks like Toyota has changed the battery model number at least twice in last few years. Looking back, I have had the ... Read More
It recently cost me over $300 to take care of the 12V battery dying suddenly with no dashboard indications of impending doom. The cost was about $100 for the tow to the dealer, and $215 for the battery and labor. Not a warranty item (a 2004 Prius w/60K miles, although I do have an extended warranty to 100K miles and 5 years). We had just pulled into the parking lot of ... Read More
I have a 2004. 1. Acceleration is not just good but great at all speeds UNLESS the battery boost is depleted from 5-10 minutes of severe uphill driving like going over a mountain pass. It gets back to normal when you come down the other side and the battery has a chance to recharge. 2. There was a software problem that sounds like what you describe. It got a lot of ... Read More
I have experienced the exact issue you are describing. I own a 2004 prius and I could sense there was a problem with the car since I brought it home two years ago. The original tires were replaced at 31000 mi at my own expense because the Toyota dealer in Rochester, MI would not help me. In fact, they refused to acknowledge that there was an issue. To my utter disbelief, ... Read More
My friend is moving to Tokyo and is willing to sell me either one of his two cars. The first is a 2004 Toyota Prius with 41K miles. The cars is clean, with a few bumper marks from city driving. The second is a 2006 Mazda 5 with 9K miles on it. The cars are each available at the same price, and I'm wondering which vehicle is a better buy. My ... Read More
Hi, I have a 2004 Prius with the GPS. The day before my 60,000 mile checkup, my screen went berserk and showed little or nothing - and radio and heater stopped working. I brought it in, paid $400. for the checkup and was then told that they'd have to order a part to get the GPS and all that's attached to the screen controls, radio, heater, monitors. That part and the ... Read More
First time poster, long time reader. I just traded in my 2004 Chevrolet (gasp) Corvette for a new Prius with Pkg#6. Got a great deal at Manhattan Beach Toyota, paying invoice for the car ($26,300 + floor mats)and got a more than fair deal on my trade. Had tons of equity in the Vette so I didn't use the financing incentive, but that is a great deal right now. I have ... Read More
My first post on this forum, so my apologies in advance if I make a protocol error, plus I am handicapped and on strong doses of morphine for pain. I tell you this because my memory is very poor and I forget things. For those who say the extended warranty is not worth it, you are probably right with a Toyota. All bets off with a hybrid. The fuel and electrical ... Read More
Other than owner abuse to my knowledge none, or a tiny miniscule number, have ever been replaced for failure. If it's within or very close to 100K then it's still within warranty until 2009. Toyota's own testing indicates that the batteries should last the life of the vehicle ( 150K? 200K? 250K? ). Do a google and see how many actual owners have had the batteries fail. Lot's of people were ... Read More
I have a white 2004 "Car of the Year" Prius with 24,000 miles with the California passenger lane stickers already on. Doesn't do me any good since I am now living in Corpus Christi, TX, but I am thinking of selling it on e-mail. It's in very good condition inside and out and excellent mechanical condition. I have the extended warranty which I believe is transferrable. I bought the car at ... Read More
I've never driven the HCH, but a previous rental experience with a 2004 Prius left me with a very unfavorable impression of car, due to what I perceived as "soft", "floaty" and "numb" handling. The advent of the Touring Edition made me take another look, and I'm happy to say that it addressed my previous concerns, to the point that I bought one yesterday. What constitutes "acceptable" ride and handling is ... Read More

First 2007 touring picture: http://toyota.jp/prius/grade/touring/ Seat-height adjustment and tilt/telescope steering wheel will not appear until the 2008(possibly 2009USA) model Prius(if they do ever happen). The 2007 Prius is a 2006 carry over with new numeric option packages, standard side and side curtain SRS, and the addition of the touring package for the USA which has been available in Japan and Europe since 2004. YMMV, MidCow Add a 6-speed manual and I ... Read More
The Prius uses Goodyear Integrity tires (at least the 2004-06 generation), and these are not directional. When radial tires first became common the early 70s, they were not supposed to be crossed during rotation. But as I said, and pf flyer has concurred, today's radials (as long as they are not directional) are typically recommended to be crossed. Toyota recommends differently however, and I don't know why.
I have a 2004 Prius that just went in for service and the dealer said there was a recall which required reprogramming the car. The car was fine before that other than the occasional check engine light after restarting the car after a long trip. After the reprogramming - now I get alot of the electrical type failures reported by others - radio cuts off, display disappears, climate screen says air ... Read More
We'll make sure it is documented, thanks. This is seeming to me not to be a problem that is limited to a specific model year, as I see postings of the same problem for models from 2001 through 2006 (on this forum and there are 2 others from 2006 on the NHTSA ODI website). About 24,000 cars were recalled from 2004 and 5 by Toyota for the problem, but clearly others ... Read More
They work. There is also CanView. It can display lots of data on the MFD from the "CAN bus". Works on 2004 and 2005 Prius, but not yet on 2006 (display has gone to higher standards). Do a Google search for it. Several posters on other Forums have reported the EV mod was installed and their Toyota dealer didn't comment on it. It's standard in Europe anyway, so shouldn't cause any ... Read More
I'm new to this site... I have a 2004 prius -- mine has had intermitten glitches and it has been starting by itself for over two years and it gets pretty upsetting when I have been out of the vehicle for hours and it is on when I return. At times the windows will roll down on their own and that really "sucks" when it happens during a rain storm or ... Read More
