1993 Toyota MR2 2dr Coupe

Review

Truly a work of art aesthetically and on the road, one feels connected to the ground. The weight distribution is divine, and I fell in love with this car from the very first time I saw one over 10 years ago.

Favorite Features

The transmission in the 1993 version is tough, and the shifts can be done with solid ease. Also when one disconnects the Electro-hydraulic Power Steering the road-feel is amazing.

Suggested Improvements

None. It is a pity that cars are not made like this anymore. The Lotus Elise may have the go-cart feel of the MR2 however who knows about its reliability issues. The MR2 is the perfect combination of performance, economy, and reliability. FUN.

Review

The MR2 handles very well, except in snow. I get 34 mpg hwy and 26 in town. It has room for several bags of groceries etc. The only problem is that it leaks at the back of the door windows in a heavy rain. Great other than that!

Favorite Features

Handling, looks, mileage, dependability

Suggested Improvements

Better weatherstripping above doors.

Review

The MR2 is very well engineered and built. Mine has been trouble free and the quality of the engineering (good materials selection) makes the car easy to keep looking new. The handling of the 93 and 94 models is very friendly. It isn't a Lotus Elise, but it is as close as you are going to get for less than the sales tax on a new Elise. It actually is a better built car, which is probably the reason Toyota could not make money selling them.

Favorite Features

Handling, styling, efficiency, reliability. Still has a lot of "wow" factor and impresses kids that were born after this car was designed. Still quick and gets 28 to 30 MPG. Even today, no cars match its combination of styling, efficiency and performance.

Review

Underrated car. Still looks great on the road, especially compared to more modern, bloated sports cars. Handles well. Comfortable. Good on gas. Great balance. T-tops are perfect for the beach weather.

Favorite Features

Mid engine layout. Stellar looks. T-tops. Handling compares to modern sports cars with just better tires. 40/60 balance.

Suggested Improvements

Ability to fit wide 17" tires. Heavy rear tire wear. 6th gear.

Review

I wrote a review of this car 5 years ago, soon after it was purchased. I thought I'd follow up on that review. This MR2 was was purchased with 173K miles, and now has 235K Miles. In that time, I've only had it in the shop for tires. I've personally replaced the sparkplugs, battery, rear brakes and oil, and that's it. This dependable car has started right up every day without fail. Amazingly, this car seems to be worth just as much now as it was 5 years ago! So I'm pleased with the car, and its ability to retain value. All in all, this has been one of the most positive experiences I've had with a car. My plan is to drive it into the ground, and maybe buy another one.

Favorite Features

Low cost of ownership, reliable transportation, feels like driving a go-cart.

Suggested Improvements

Not much... though I really wish Toyota would make more interesting cars than what they're offering now.

Review

Due to its rarity and absolute fun to drive, this car is almost perfect. Getting 30 MPG average. Does not have the brute power of a V8, but handles amazingly well.

Favorite Features

T-Top, Go-kart handling

Suggested Improvements

Insulation between cabin and engine. Higher quality seats. Taller 5th gear to improve noise/gas mileage.

Review

Great car, great looks. Pretty roomy interior and, actually has some luggage space. Gets 30m/gal with 50/50 city/hwy driving. Drives well in rain too.

Favorite Features

Personally, best looks for under $ 20,000. Awesome handling. Shifts smooth and short.

Suggested Improvements

5th gear is too short. Underpowered slightly.

Review

As I drove around town in my MKI MR2 I would dream about the day I would find my MKII. That would be the only car to take me out of my MKI. I found it, and was in no way disappointed. The styling, the performance, the ride that is the reputation of the MR2 still lives on. You would think that a 10+ year old car would be passe' but this baby will turn heads all day long! Economical and stylish, powerful and practical.

Favorite Features

The added room from a MKI to a MKII is a big plus, both in the passenger compartment and the trunk. Still agile and powerful. Better sound system. Great road presence!

Suggested Improvements

Wind noise at highway speed needs attention.

Review

Going from 2000 Celica GTS to 93 MR2, no regret. Nowadays Toyotas are crap, if they can save $1 on every Camry/Corolla they sell they can save millions per year, therefore they now use the cheapest parts possible on every car they build. No oil leak, no major problem after 10 yrs. Stunning automobile. It was in production for almost 10 yrs just like the NSX, RX7, 300ZX, etc.....The golden age of Japanese cars were early 1990s.

Favorite Features

non-interference engine design. plenty of torque, fuel economy, comfort, looks, handling(.9xG cornering), braking (4 wheel vented discs), lots of storage space for the size, voltmeter gauge, build quality, factory sound system, unique factor, runs on regular gas, reliability.

Suggested Improvements

Wind noise at highway speed, 2.0 GTI 16V 3SGE with VVTI engine, more progressive suspension settings, headlights that open lower,
