On October 7th, 2009, I experienced a very similar situation to what Richard described. In my case, my 2007 Matrix lost engine and steering power in the middle of the freeway while I was on my way to work. Thank God I was only traveling 40 or so miles per hour because of traffic; if I had been traveling faster, I have no doubt this incident could have resulted in injuries ... Read More...

I had similar problem and Toyota dealership service persuaded me to have some kind of belt change. But it did not stop the vibration after spending a few hundreds more. A few months later, the battery died. And amazingly the battery change fixed the problem. I have a more powerful battery though. Maybe you can try it. We purchased a pre-owned 2007 Matrix with 12K miles on it and managed to add an addition 17K miles in the span of 6 months (do LOTS of commuting for work and also did a trip to Florida to and from NYC). For my part, I feel Toyota has made a mistake in how it has chosen to equip the higher trim lines with the larger engine only - I think the car does fine with the smaller engine and think that 5 mpg or so is a big sacrifice I agree with you there - my 2007, of course, has the 1.8 and with a stick shift I manage 35 mpg as a running average. I am not sure about a leased car - do you have to still do all the servicing? I bought my car and purchased the pre-paid service plan for my 2007 toyota matrix for ~$600. I have to say, I love it! Well, Toyota had our Matrix for 2 days. They DID install a shim and adjustment kit for the rear end. They DID bring the car into factory spec alignment. They DID NOT replace the tires.
