sorry for being so late with my response, but maybe it will help the next person out. bottom line, the guy is taking complete advantage of you! That vehicle is worth a lot more than a grand in parts alone. I would have taken (towed it) to another mechanic in a heart beat. The biggest problem today is finding one (mechanic) that isn't going to steal from you. There are some ... Read More

Very difficult situation. A lot comes down to how much you trust the mechanic. And if the car is immobile it is difficult, though not impossible, to get a second opinion. What were the circumstances of the car stopping? I very much doubt that the used car pricing site can help you account for the engine situation, which, if true, will be the overwhelming determinant of the car's price. Have you ... Read More

My Landcruiser blew a head gasket and my mechanic told me that it's dead. He's showing interest in buying it because he found an engine to put in it. The car was garage kept, so there's no rust, a few little scratches and dings. The engine only had 72k miles on it. I just put 4 new tires on it, has runners, grille guard, moon roof, roof rack and CD player. ... Read More

  • "BRAKE" Light Trouble

1996 TLC with 84K on it now. The "BRAKE" indicator light is coming on occasionally. When it comes on and the Parking Brake is NOT engaged, the light is very dim, almost to the point that you can't see it if the sun is up. When I bought the machine, the Parking Brake was very slack, and if this problem existed, I did not notice it. I removed the console and ... Read More

  • Transmission Fluid, Dexron III or Type T-4 for LX470

Written by: mkwame on Apr 18, 2002 5:50:38 AM

Can someone enlighten me with this question? Is the Toyota Type T-IV ATF good for the 1998- 2002 Lexus LX470 and Toyota Land Cruisers? The manual for the these trucks suggests Dextron III. My confusion stems from my old 1996 LS400 operator's manual which recommends the use of Dextron III but everyone on the LS400 forum including the dealer highly recommended the Type T-4 tranny fluid for smooth shifting. Thanks for ... Read More
