2004 Toyota Highlander AWD 4dr SUV w/3rd Row (3.3L 6cyl 5A)
We purchased our 04 Highlander new in Nov 04 after extensive research and dealing. 5000 miles later we're pleased with our decision. In addition to day to day commuting we have used it for several long trips, including one with the vehicle packed completely full of furniture. It is comfortable and stable to drive, and has performed competently under a wide range of driving and load conditions. Very versatile and capable.
Key features that made us choose the Highlander over the competition at this price point: reliable, roomy, comfortable (I'm 6'2"), car-like handling, safe, fold-flat third row seats (though not large, we've actually used them), V6, AWD, sunroof, decent gas mileage, strong resale.
Darker, more child-friendly interior fabric. Sunroof (even with the optional wind deflector) is loud at certain speeds and requires other windows to be rolled down to avoid pressure cavitation. Steering feel could be sharpened a little. A little more storage space for driver/passenger would be nice.
