My 2001 highlander is the best car i have ever owned and i have bought cars for almost 60 years. As far as the engine light is concerned forget about it it, can not be fixed all you are doing is throwing money away. After wasting about $500 i realized that it's a factory mistake that Toyota will not fix for that i may not buy a Toyota next time.
Next time Toyota you make a factory mistake stand up to it
Had the same problem with light. Check the engine temp. If the the engine is running cooler than normal the thermostat is stuck open. This will cause the light to go on because of improper engine temp.
hot12dog - I have 2001 Highlander - LOVE IT !
The engine light only
comes on (when you keep it up, of course) when I don't screw the gas cap on and hear it CLICK at least a couple times.
This has occurred about 6 times in the 13 years I've had the car....and as I drive away from the gas station, I realize I haven't heard the cap click, and voila'!
The light comes on.
